I can see why an airline would prefer kids rather pets, because two strange kids who don't get along are probably not going to try to kill each other. Or at least, they have no chance of succeeding.
That being said, I do find the fees ridiculous. For me, the biggest drawback is the vet letter, which in itself would probably $150 here. People can get on flights with deadly diseases that can be communicted to other PEOPLE, so what's the big deal with dogs, when there is unlikely to even be another dog on the flight? Well, I guess they should be healthy enough to fly. Still, a letter within 30 days of flight seems like major overkill to me.
