| Toby pulling hair We've had Toby since the end of February this year (2016). He was born and raised in NYC and spent time with our daughter in NJ and had no problems when he came to us. Our daughter moved into a not pet friendly condo. Toby took right to me and Adele and we love him dearly. A few weeks ago we noticed Toby was chewing on his feet often and there were a couple of bare skin patches on his hips and back. I have since seen him pulling at his hair and chewing at his back. His vet diagnosed allergies and gave him an injection at the end of July. This has not seemed to help. His scratching and biting is not a constant thing and just a few times a day. Is anyone here familiar with something like this and should I take him to a dermatologist vet? We live in Southwest Indiana so Toby made the trip from the East Coast. |

| It sounds like it could be a flea allergy... because of his back and hips. His feet...maybe another allergy. Aside from the injection, what else did the vet suggest? What flea prevention are you using? Even with it, one bite can set these symptoms off..... A dermatologist is not a bad idea, but a general vet is where I would start.

| Ladyjane, thank you for your quick response. The vet thought it might be from the environment change. He said if the shot didn't work we could try some pills. He also gave us a Nexgard for fleas but I'd like to find something cheaper than that. |

Some products cover both and may be less than the Nexgard...I honestly don't know. I would also look into an RX shampoo. The vets charge more..you can buy it online. Maybe something soothing might help. Sometimes when they itch like that they end up with a skin infection. Better to start using something now to try to prevent it. Synergy labs makes some great shampoos and conditioners and they are fairly inexpensive...you can find them on Amazon.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Chewing/licking paws is the cardinal sign of some kind of an allergy...flea, dust, grass, pollen, food, whatever. -- Did you switch foods at all recently? -- What was the "shot" given...steroids...? -- Is the skin irritated where it's patchy? If it is indeed allergies, I'm very surprised that the shot (if it was steroid) hasn't provided any relief at all - that's very odd. Or did it give relief at first and then wear off...? For year-round allergies, your best bet is either Apoquel or Atopica. Read more about allergies here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

| A shot and daily baths did not seem to do good. Yesterday I took Toby back to the vet with that information and we went from there. We got an Rx of Apoquel of which he gets a half tab twice a day for two weeks then once a day and a bottle of Douxo chlorhexidine for a daily bath for a while. After two doses of the Apoquel yesterday he has stopped scratching and pulling at his hair and so far no side effects. Hopefully this will work well and we can stop during the winter months. I was told by the vet that the change from the East Coast to the Midwest was likely responsible for his troubles and I believer it. He's a bit over nine years old and came to us last February from our daughter in Jersey. I doubt it is the food as we have continues to give him the same food he has always had so environment is the likely culprit. My little buddy has never tested positive for heart worm and gets Heart Guard. For preventing fleas he gets NexGard. In the time he's been here he has taken over the family and home. He seems to get panic attacks in the car or truck though. I want to thank everyone for their responses and advice. This is a great site and Adele and I both will be back often to see what's going on. |

| Yes, it very well may have been the move. Different areas of the country have different allergens. That's great you have it under control with the Apoquel! Food allergies are not as common as people think they are. Thanks for updating!!
