Dry food out all day or once or twice a day? When I got my 2 babies seven months ago, the breeder said to have my dry food out always. My Vet says I can feed them once or twice a day (I am switching them to the Blue Buffalo salmon flavor and they really like it). I am confused as to what to do about timing of feedings.Any suggestions?

Is either dog underweight or overweight? If so, I would listen to the vet. If leaving food out is working, I wouldn't worry about it. We free-fed our first yorkie for over 16 years and it was never a problem (except when we realized that a crafty mouse was raiding the bowl and night and storing some in a bottle under the kitchen sink). We have found that for our dogs, food is less important if they don't have to worry about it. but if you have a chowhound or a dog whose diet must be measured/controlled, I would still feed at least twice a day. These guys are too small to go 24 hours without food.

My sister had a Pom and a Maltese that lived up to 18+ years with food out all day and they never had any weight issues. Just make sure that their food is protected from ants (which is a big problem where I live). Their bowls were small so we just placed the on top of a big frisbee with water, functioning as a small pond that didn't allow ants to crawl all over their bowl. Right now I feed my 4 months old Yorkie twice a day because that's also what my vet recomended me. It's also part of her crate training since I feed her inside of it. In just 2 days she has realized that the crate is a comfortable place for her to stay and not a form of punishment to be scared of. Last edited by JuanRamos; 04-14-2014 at 07:56 PM.

Thank You Thank you for your responses. I guess it depends on whether either of our dogs have weight issues, etc. So far we haven't had any issues with the food staying out all day, so I think we will continue with that. If weight becomes an issue , then we can rethink and restructure.

| I have always fed my dogs 2 times a day, example:: if they need 1 cup a day, I give 1/2 a cup in the morning, the other 1/2 in the early evening. what ever the amount is, split it.

When I first adopted my Yorkie, Milo, I worried b/c he really didn't seem interested in eating. I talked with my vet about it. He told me I worried too much---to just "free feed" by leaving out his food all the time. I have been able to do that most of the time. At the beginning of each day I only put out his daily amount---1/2 cup. Right now though I'm having trouble with ants so I put it out only at certain times & make sure he knows it's there . After giving him time to eat or not eat, then I put it away for several more hours.

The only small caveat I'd mention here is we have seen dogs choke on pieces of kibble. As long as your 2 seem to eat safely, it should be okay.
