My sister had a Pom and a Maltese that lived up to 18+ years with food out all day and they never had any weight issues. Just make sure that their food is protected from ants (which is a big problem where I live). Their bowls were small so we just placed the on top of a big frisbee with water, functioning as a small pond that didn't allow ants to crawl all over their bowl.
Right now I feed my 4 months old Yorkie twice a day because that's also what my vet recomended me. It's also part of her crate training since I feed her inside of it. In just 2 days she has realized that the crate is a comfortable place for her to stay and not a form of punishment to be scared of.
