| Need advice about not pooping regularly and in the crate at night Hello all! We had just gotten Oshie on March 9 2014. He is almost 12 weeks, he was born on Christmas day! His first vet visit was that Wednesday. We had brought a stool sample in and the vet determined he had giardia which came from his breeder. He was prescribed the metronidazle and the panacur. The panacur we started him on right away. The metronidazle we just got yesterday. I am a bit of a hypochondriac so that is why I am here. Oshie doesn't have a set pooping schedule and only went once yesterday (which was in his crate around 930). We stopped feeding him at 730 and we crated him at 9 right after we tried to make him go potty. He didn't have to so we put him in the crate. Half hour later we woke up to him whining and poop in his crate. He is being feed Nutri source small breed which was the food his breeder had him on. We feed him 4 times a day. Once at 5 am, another between 11-12, again at 4-5, and at 7-730. We also give him Nutri cal 4 times a day. He eats pretty well, some times a few bits sometimes a handful it just varies. Is this normal that he doesn't poop almost immediately (5 - 45 mins) after his meals like i've read puppies should? Do you think this is caused by him having Giardia? He's been pooping in his crate at night for the past few days. Even though we try to make him go potty right before he goes to bed. He does pee normally though. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

| he is still new to your home may be nervous with being sick and going to the vet and such. Is he drinking enough fluids? how is his poop when he poops? is it mushy...regular like a tootie roll, super hard?? he may just not relax enough until he is ready for bed. does he go outside or on potty pads? just trying to get a bit more info so we can figure what is going on.

| Thank you for welcoming us! My boyfriend and I are so excited to have him, he's such a joy in our lives! We thought about the fact that he could still be getting used to the new environment as well. I just worry a lot about him now that we found out he was sick, you know?? Motherly instincts! As for drinking we usually finger feed/water feed him and he does it on his own as well. I think he gets enough water throughout the day. He's only 1.4 lbs at the moment. Although, he has Giardia, his poop (At least to me) is fine. It's solid, as in it doesn't break form when i pick it up but isn't super hard, I think what a normal poop should look like. No runny stuff haven't seen mucus or anything and smells like, well poop. Nothing horrible as pleasant as poop can be. His poop is long though and always a second little pinch comes off at the end. Last night however, his poop didn't have as much girth as usual and there were like 4 or so "pebbles" after a bigger strand of poop. (SORRY IF THIS IS TOO GRAPHIC JUST WANT TO BE DETAILED). I would consider his poop last night "harder" than his poops before. We use puppy pads for now, no cat harness or anything will fit him to take him outside yet. __________________ |

| I guess my last reply didn't make it. Sorry if this is doubled! But thank you for welcoming us! My boyfriend and I are so excited!!! He brings so much joy to us! We bought him during the time of the Olympics which TJ Oshie was on the American team and we decided to name him after the hockey player I feel that he is drinking enough. We hand feed him and hand water feed him (put some on our finger to lick off) other times he does it himself. Usually he drinks whenever he eats and after playing. His poop is what i would consider to be "normal". It is usually logged shaped and not hard, but not mushy. When i pick it up it doesn't fall apart, but is soft at the same time. Like a ripe fruit, soft but firm, and is brown color. No mucus, no runny stuff either. Normally a long one and then a pinch more. However, yesterday his poop was skinnier in the girth sense and was harder, and same in color, also there were like 4 or so pieces and one longer piece. No foul smells either, just smelled like poop. He is using puppy pads because he's only 1.4lbs and no harness fits him even the cat ones, so we are waiting until he gets a little bit bigger. He never pees in his crate only poops. and he pees regularly. Last edited by luvtadance13; 03-18-2014 at 10:56 AM. |

| sounds like his poop is ok......so there must be something he is taking comfort in as the place for him to poop. does he have a pad in there? if it's big enough try putting a pad in for him to go on. they do have puppy apartments which have areas for both bed and potty. mine sleep with me so they potty on a pad and weve never used crates so I am not really going to be of any help ....hoping others will chime in.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on your new baby, Oshie! I recently learned from a friend how infectious giardia can be, so be sure to launder your pup's bedding and clean his crate thoroughly or he will keep re-infecting himself. Although he is very small, Nutrical is not necessary as a scheduled supplement. It really is only for actual signs of hypoglycemia. When it is given, it needs to be followed up with some food/protein -- within 30 minutes if I recall correctly -- or it will have the opposite effect of what is intended. At his size and age, his body probably won't establish a pooping schedule for awhile. The urge to poop can be harder to control than peeing. If you can, put him in an xpen at night with his pad in one corner. Or use one of the crates that has a separate bed area and pad area.

| My youngest yorkie never pooped on "schedule", it took me a while to figure she went when she was getting hungry- the action of her rumbling tummy must have pushed things along. At 2 1/2 she still goes right before meals. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh lordie, YES, giardia can totally mess up the small intestine's flora, causing a plethora of long term problems. However, it sounds to me that you've caught the giardia super early - without even seeing signs of horrible diarrhea - so that's pretty amazing, and lucky. So, I'd doubt the giardia will cause too much havoc...that said, you may want to supplement your kiddo with a probiotic for awhile just to repopulate that small intestine. His poo could be variable for a while both due to any lingering giardia, and due to both those meds. As far as schedule, it will be a while before you see something predictable both bc of age and bc of his current issues...but that will all normalize w/ time. As for the poo texture, it sounds like the slightly harder one is more normal to me...the other description sounds a bit 'mushy' or 'soft serve' (sorry, I know, gross)...but that's prob due to current issue. Poos will firm up over time. Btw, WELCOME to YT !

| Where in Pittsburgh Hi Luvtadance, Where in Pittsburgh are you from? Pippin and I live in Aspinwall. Pippin is 7 mos old and 5.5 lbs. She is a sweetie and just got over stress diarrhea last week from being boarded at the vets. She is feeling better now. So glad your little one never got diarrhea. It's awful to see them go through that. SueinPgh
