Default Ticks on my dog! What to do!?

Hello and happy new year everyone!

For anyone that live in Florida or anywhere else with the same climate as The Bahamas; PLEASE HELP ME!

For the last 5-6 years we had our yorkie, we never found ticks on him.
Last year however, around June we notced that Diallo (our yorkie) would have a few ticks on him every other day or so. We were using frontline on him at the time. Since it appear as if the frontline was not working any more, I decided to put him on K9 advantix.

The Advintix worked for a few months then around November we noticed he had ticks on him again. We would find anywhere from 1-5 ticks on him. These ticks would be small - medium in size. I decided to keep these ticks after we took them off to see if they would die but they didn't.

When December rolled around, we started to find ticks in our bed! Diallo sleeps on the bed with us. We have a sheet over our comforter in which he sleeps on and we would usually find them here. However, we found a few under our comforter.

When I saw this I completely bombed our place with a fogger and I also sprayed our base boards, bed and carpet in the room with Raid tick spray. I cut Diallo's short. Along with his regular K9 Advantix I also sprayed him with Vet Kem's Ovitrol plus fle, tick and bot spray. We also threw away some of sheets/bedding that we thaught may have the ticks. We also put garlic in his water.

After doing all this, we did not find any ticks for a few days but today we found a tick on top of the bed and we also found on under the dam sheets.

I do not know what else to do. Can someone please help me out! I am afraid that we will get bitten and get some kind of disease from these ticks. Not to mention, its just nasty to think that there are ticks in my bed!

Some one, plese advise me what to do.

Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to YT!

I would be very careful of using multiple products on my Yorkie. They can be very toxic alone and deadly used in combination. Some Yorkies can have an allergic reaction to flea and tick products.

I would consult my vet about my dog, and then consult a local pest control company about treating my home. Be sure to tell them to use a pet safe product. I can't recommend anything else as I am unfamiliar with the type of ticks and the environment you are in.

In general, ticks will attach to an animal or person to feed. Once they are full, they drop off and live anywhere until it's feed time again. Vacuumimg frequently may help. Diatomatious(sp) earth for corners and the yard... look into Boric acid (non toxic)

Article I found: thebahamasweekly.com Tick Borne Diseases

The author gives her email address at the end, maybe ask her if she has found any good solutions for treating the yard. So far, I've read to keep the grass short, eliminate woodpiles, and ticks are fond of trees. If preparing your yard is too much, consider preparing an area specifically for your dog...

Kjc thanks for the reply.

I have been using the diamatacious earth but it was not effective.

I am pleading with all members to please help me to take care of this problem.

What really puzzles me is that we NEVER had any sort of tick problem until this year. Its as if the ticks have built up an immunity against everything that I use to propell them.

So again, can I please get as much advice as possible!?
Thank you

If it's possible you might want to treat your yard with tick/flea granules. I don't like using them but would rather use them, than to have ticks in my bed.

We've had flea problems on and off and I'm hesitant to use flea meds but have. From what I've heard most of the flea meds are not that effective, it's as though the fleas are getting immune.

I know Dawn dish washing detergent will kill fleas and might help with ticks.

Another possibility, if you live in the country is guinea hens, they supposedly eat ticks and will keep them out of your yard.

Try using your monthly product every 3 weeks... but consult with your vet first, and ask about using 3 or 4 different products on a rotational basis. Comb your dog alot to physically remove the ticks...

This influx of ticks is probabaly due to some evironmental factors, ie: that present the perfect enviroment for ticks and their reproduction. Hopefully something will change that will naturally cause them to disappear as quickly as they came on... you may just have to suffer through until this happens...

Also: some products will take time to be effective.

Are your neighbors having problems too or it is just in your yard?

You can try using CedarCide..

Cedarcide integrated pest management systems natural pest control products

I know a lot of people who had success with it, call the company up and speak to someone there about your problem. You can treat your yard, house and dog with it..

Thanks everyone for the replies.

If I was to put the Advantix on Diallo every 3 weeks instead of once a month; do you really think this will help? Also, has anyone tried this method before with positive results? And do you think this will be safe for Diallo?

The Cedarcide that was mentioned; has anyone used it before with positive results?

Like I said, I NEVER EVER had ticks on my dog before. But last year, they came and NOTHING worked anymore to repel them (Frontline plus and K9 Advantix).
What I would like to know if this same thing has happened in America? I know someone said that maybe its an environmental thing that has caused the "perfect storm" for ticks but has this swarm happen in other places also?

I do not know if my neighbors have the same problem but I know for certain that there has been a VERY SERIOUS problem with ticks all over my Island.
There are quit a number of stray dogs that live on and around the bushes of the golf course that I live on. I know that this does not help the situation; so I called the humane society to round them up. Hopefully they get all of them very soon.

Again, thank you everyone.

The herbal remedy of vegetable or nut oil and 10 to 25 drops Rose Geranium essential oilium essential oil also sounds intersting. Has anyone tried this with positive results?

Thank you.

This is super effective - Preventic

When I fostered a dog from the pound, it was infested, It was the only thing I can get quickly that worked. If you use it read the warnings on it first..

They also recommend taking the collar putting it in the vacuum and then vacuum your rugs to kill the ticks in the rug.

I still think cedarcide will be your best bet to treat your entire yard safely.

I used Revolution for sacoptic mites every 3 weeks for 2-3 treatments at the recommendation of my vet.

East Coast USA We had a unusually long, heavy attack of ticks starting last spring. Seems alot of YTer's were complaining....

Maybe it's something like the 17 year locusts... I don't recall ticks ever being quite that bad before. They dropped out of trees on you and everytime I went outside I'd find one or two on me and the dogs. I did find some in the house too. Finally around August they let up some. The news said all the rain we had brought them on. We had quite a bit of spring showers last year.

I live on the water off the Chesapeake Bay....

We, at one time, had neighbors that had two dogs with a bad case of ticks and fleas. Needless to say they soon were in our yard. We elected to use granules to treat our entire yard, and we have a very big yard. We didn't want to take any chances at all. Several years ago I was hospitalized with tick fever and I was very sick for quite awhile. So, I understand you urgency in wanting to address this asap. Good luck!

Default Ticks

I live in new england and we have a lot of deer ticks. I keep my dog in a puppy cut and comb him with a flea comb when he comes in. Deer ticks are very tiny and this seems to work for us. Good Luck (I hate ticks - any kind)!

I am so sorry to hear you are struggling with ticks. This isnt something that I have had experience of, but I know that my mom experienced them. She lives in the countryside and they have deer etc in nearby fields. She and her neighbour used eucalyptus oil on them. I know that some of the ticks found in European forest areas carry tick borne encephalitis which is very serious and you can get vaccinated against this. I dont know if this applies to your area though.

If your treatment isnt proving to be effective, another suggestion is to capture one of the creatures and have the vet identify it just to make sure it is definitely a tick, Im sure youre right, but you never know. You may find it interesting to find out what the local veterinary hospital or specialist vet recommends in the way of treatment, if there is an epidemic of ticks locally.
