| All you raw feeders out there.. I need your opinions! I am currently writing a research paper explaining the benefits of a raw diet, what/how to feed, and I am also dispelling some of the common myths. One of my sources is this website: The Many Myths of Raw Feeding. On this site, they state that wolves are carnivores that do not eat the stomach contents of their prey. Originally, I believed this to be true because the evidence they provide appears to be sound. I also felt that this is a pretty good source, so I started to incorporate this aspect into my paper. However, I am using a couple of canine nutrition books as sources as well, and both of them believe that wolves do eat the stomach contents of their prey. If this was true, then we could assume that wolves and dogs are omnivores that require fruits and vegetables in their diet. So now I am confused. What do you guys think? I know this is a bit of a weird topic, but I am hoping to get some opinions. Let me know if this is the wrong place to put this thread, and I can move it if necessary. thank you

| I don't know whether dogs require fruits and vegetables, or not?...All I can tell you is that my little 5 lb. yorkie goes absolutely nuts over green beans, carrots and apple slices...If I feed the veges at the same time as the raw, it is not unusual for her to take a bite or two of the veges and then raw...It's like she likes them equally...Thinking from a common sense approach, I would think that the contents in the stomach of the prey were like a sweet sauce on the meat... |

| This is a very heated topic among prey model raw feeders! I haven't done enough scientific research myself but from my interactions with other raw feeders, I've decided that dogs are carnivores and NOT omnivores. There are instances of raw feeders giving their dogs whole prey and the dog shakes out the contents of the stomach before eating. I still give mine some fresh fruits and vegetables as a snack but I don't think it's nutritionally necessary. BUT keep in mind this is my own personal opinion with no substantial evidence to back it up.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | My belief is that dogs are carnivores, based on their digestive system and their dentition. While they can eat fruit/veg, their systems and enzymes etc aren't designed to digest them easily. I also believe that many wolves eat the stomachs (the meat) themselves and seem *more* interested in the stomachs - thus, we'll often hear of the prey's stomach's "contents" being strewn AROUND the kill site, not all of the contents actually eaten - and this makes sense. In the meantime, while the wolf was eating the stomach "meat" some of the stomach's contents was also consumed - so then some camps automatically believe the wolf is suddenly not a carnivore. All I think it means is that the wolf/dog may not be an *obligate* carnivore (like, say, the cat) - where its sole nutrition should really be nothing but meat. That's my take on it. I feel *very* strongly that dogs are not omnivores at all. The are carnivores.
