| Vet never told me about flea/tick medicine. HELP? Hi my Yorkie is 5 months old. He already got all his shots and everything and he is on heartworm prevention medicine. (Heartguard I think). Everyone asks me if he is on Frontline or anything for fleas/ticks, but the vet never told me about this. He doesn't seem to have any fleas or ticks but I'm not 100% sure. He doesn't scratch himself a lot either. What shall I do? Does he really need it? If so, where do I get it, and what do i use? Please and thanks. I really appreciate it |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I would call your vet and discuss your concern. I live in Louisiana and we definitely need flea & tick meds!

YT 1000 Club Member | You want to make sure your little one has preventitive for fleas. They can cause some pretty nasty things. Definately talk to your vet like the above poster suggests and I know people here have opinions on which products work best for them. Since most of the those go by weight that's where your vet can point you in the right direction. I haven't seen any fleas on my Roxie yet but I know it's coming so she's getting a bath and flea stuff put on her this week. I used to use Advantyx but it wasn't lasting the whole month like it's supposed to. I found out that you have to wait about 13 days before bathing because even though they claim it's water proof it's not. Advantage works much better for us. It lasts a whole month. I just bathe her first then apply it and try not to bathe too often (very hard in the summer). There are good products and it just depends on what works best for you.

| In the case of fleas, if you don't have them, you don't need to use the med. At the same time, if your dog does get them and they take over your house, there is a lot of cleaning to do, etc.

| I'm also in Louisiana, and our vet put our babies on Sentinel. It's a once a month pill and it protects against a lot of types of worms as well as fleas. It doesn't actually kill adult fleas, but it kills any eggs they lay. It's been rare we've ever seen a flea on them, so it definitely works. Heartguard looks like it only works to prevent heartworms so if you want to prevent fleas, there are options that offer more protection, but they do cost more. |

| Jackson does very well on K9 Advantix. No fleas or ticks. He had 4 ticks in 4 weeks while on Frontline Plus. Maryland is a heavily tick infested state though. It all depends on where you live.

| Suggest talking to your vet... It is important to have your dog on some type of preventative. It helps to protect them from more than flees and ticks, and it helps so that they dont come into your house- that is a huge hassle! Talk with your vet, our two are only on Frontline for about 6-8 months once it freezes here in Michigan I stop it and then when it starts getting warm. Good luck talk to your vet he will help you to find out the best preventative for your pooch!

| I use advantage multi 10.. most do not do ticks.. but this does every thing else including worms and heartworms..go online and read about it.. I have 5 yorkies and use this..nothing else.. some vets might have to order it in for you.. unless you are in an area with your baby that has long grass you do not have to worry about ticks.. Hope this helps.. anne |
