I'm also in Louisiana, and our vet put our babies on Sentinel. It's a once a month pill and it protects against a lot of types of worms as well as fleas. It doesn't actually kill adult fleas, but it kills any eggs they lay. It's been rare we've ever seen a flea on them, so it definitely works. Heartguard looks like it only works to prevent heartworms so if you want to prevent fleas, there are options that offer more protection, but they do cost more.
