| Poo incident! Yuk! This is my first thread and I'm afraid it's a bit of an embarrassing one. Basically, my Yorkie eats POO!!!! I think she has been doing it for a while. She doesn't seem to like her own but gets stuck in to my other's dogs "doings" with great gusto! My other dog is a gsd x rottie called Scooby. He is lovely but obviously puts out quite a lot of waste product which Flo seems to like. Although I clear up as soon as I see a pile, as we have a very small garden it is easy, she tends to follow Scooby everywhere so is obviously on the spot once he's finished his ablutions! I have tried putting yogurt, mushrooms, etc in their food but to no avail. She still does it. We've had Florence since she was 12 weeks old and she is now 11 months old but I think she has only been doing this for a while. Please can someone help? Thank you for reading. Jane (Surrey, England) please help me break my disgusting habit |

| I've heard of adding pineapple. Other than that, sorry not sure. Jackson does this on occasion too and it's so gross.

| Pineapple was the trick for us. We would put a teaspoon of crushed pineapple down for Laddy once a day. Did this for 2 weeks and not one more incident.

| What kind of food are you feeding your bigger dog? I saw on Victoria Stilwell's show there were a few dogs who eat poop. One reason could be that your big dog eats too fast so his body does not digest all the nutrients and much of it gets passed. So the poop is more tempting to eat. Also if the food you are feeding your big dog is not that high quality may have something to do with it. What are you feeding your yorkie? I think you may have to find out the reason why your yorkie is doing it in the first place instead of just trying to get the poop to taste gross(er) so she won't do it anymore. Are either of the dogs getting table scraps or people food? Also maybe you could let your dogs in the garden one at a time and clean up before the other goes out?

| A lot of dog owners have this issue, my yorkie doesn't eat poop .. but one of my labs (that has since passed) did constantly. We had 2 dogs at the time, and she would only eat it when it was frozen. I'm pretty sure she was doing it as instinct (cleaning up messes) but there wasn't much I could do to deter her from it. In the winter we get a ton of snow and it is next to impossible to clean up the land mines left behind until it starts to melt.

| You probably were not feeding her enough. Mine are not poop eaters but they do love pineapple. I also mix pumpkin in their food and they love that as well. There is a thread in the Training Forum and I went to look for it and couldn't find it for some reason. But is was excellent. There is so much information and lots of poop eaters too. I'm going to search a little more because it would be well worth finding to link for the info.

I saw that episode. I would really try to make your rottie slow down. Victoria did it by dropping a little bit of food in the bowl at a time, and she raised the grade of dog food. It worked! I agree with capt_noone While you are trying different solutions don't let your dogs out at the same time and she won't have the chance to get to it. Or you get your vet's professional opinion by taking them both to vet for evalution of their food and eating habits... Good Luck to you...I know it's gross to watch your baby chomp on your rottie's brownies. When Prince was 3 months old I saw him playing with his poop and I was like YUK lol | |

| Thanks to all x Thank you for all your help. The food issue is that Scooby has a dodgy tum and so is on a high fibre prescriptive food from the vet which may produce the "loaf of bread" effect. I did wonder if I perhaps wasn't feeding Florence enough so upped her food a while ago but it didn't make any difference. Perhaps it's just habit now. I will however give the pineapple a go and if this doesn't work will speak again to my vet (he was the one who recommended mushrooms and yoghurt!) Thanks again everyone x Last edited by FLORENCE; 06-16-2009 at 10:06 AM. |
