| my yorkie may have cushings! what if my yorkie is diagnosed with cushings...and i do not treat it? is my dog in pain? what does cushings do? i have read some real horror stories. i read that some vets only treat cushings for the sake of the owner...to stop the dog from peeing in the house. any advice out there? |

| Cushings is not an easy diagnosis, lots of vets will jump to that conclusion or throw it out there even if they don't know for sure. You want to make sure your Yorkie has Cushings before you think about treating it. Has your vet tested your Yorkie yet? Canine Cushing's Forums - Powered by vBulletin

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry to hear that. My pom was diagnosed with Cushing's after being misdiagnosed for 6 months with a thyroid problem. She lived almost 3 years from the start of it. Her symptoms were excessive thirst and hunger, a lot of hair loss, sores that woudn't heal and panting. Since I am home ost of the time, the excessive peeing wasn't a big problem as she was always good about letting me know she had to go outside.I had all the testing done by a specialist and we started treatment with Lysodren sp? and it is a very toxic drug, unfortunately it made her so sick and she developed liver disease so we had to stop the cushing's treatment and concentrate on the liver which improved, She then got congestive heart failure but did well on her heart medicine. About 4 motnhs ago we started her on anipryl to help some of the cushing's symptoms and her doggy alzheimers and she did well on that but unfortunately her heart gave out last month and she went to the Rainbow bridge. I know a lot of dogs have been successfully treated for cushing's just make sure you have a vet who is very familiar with the treatment. The testing is pretty expensive as well as the medicine and followup just to give you a heads up. I do think Maya had bad days and good days but I never felt she was in pain, it was more the feeling of always being hungry and thirsty and the itching from her skin issues. I hope your baby doesn't have it but they can live for years with it.

| i havent had him tested yet. i have just been reading about cushings and my vet mentioned it a while back. at times my yorkie does drink a lot of water and then have to pee a lot...but not always. first i thought cushings, then i thought maybe it was the steamed chicken livers i sometime mix with his food. in the last couple of weeks he has peed on the floor near the sliding door. but he hasnt done so in about a week. he does not pant (yet). no sores. he does lick his lips at times. (i dont know what that means, if it means anything.) his hair is thinning around his torso and has been for a year or so. no other symptoms that i have noticed. my concern is, "what if i choose NOT to have him tested." can he just live with it OR IF he has it and i dont have it treated will the "non treatment" lead to something else which could be fatal? as long as he is not in pain i kiiind of dont want the expense of testing, etc. any advice on this is appreciated. thanks |

| There have been mutterings that my Cocoa may have Cushings. From what I have researched the treatment can be brutal. There are herbal remedies out there but I don't know what they are, how safe they are since herbal remedies aren't regulated, or the success rate. My vet told me that many of her patient's owners have decided to forgo treatment because of the med reactions. This is not a recommendation for or against treatment.

I think you need to find owners that have Cushings dogs that have/and have not treated with the lysodren/anipryl or other chemo drugs to really get a good answer. Go check out that forum I posted in my other post The treatments can be brutal, and I think it is a personal decision whether to treat or not and what the risks/benefits are. You won't know if he has cushings if they don't do all the necessary testing. Only you can decide (with the help of your vet) what is right for your dog. Your dog may have symptoms of something other than cushings

| Has diabetes been ruled out? You need to start by getting an ACTH test to get a diagnosis. Cushing's Disease (Hyperadrenocorticism) in Dogs If he does have Cushings, Anipryl is a good choice for medication if appropriate. It is safer than Lysodren and doesn't need constant monitoring. Anipryl |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | If I had another dog that had Cushings I personally would not use Lysodren it was so toxic and Maya was so sick when she was on it. At one point my husband said what are you doing to her. She did ok without meds for awhile but the Anipyril did seem to be helping. Unfortuanely her congestive heart failure was too much for her to overcome. I do believe the stress on the other organs can be caused by the Cushings. It is really a tough decision and I would get a definite diagnosis and see what the vet recomends and weigh all your options. Good luck

| The only symptoms are excessive thirst (causing excessive urination) and hair thinning? I wouldn't be too concerned about cushings right now. There are a lot of other possibilities. Have you done a blood panel, cbc and urinalysis?
