| Cocking leg to pee. Is it neutring time already? I've read some others' posts on this topic, but still am a little confused about lifting his leg to pee and marking. Two different things right? Baxter has been lifting his leg to pee consistently for probably a little over a month. He will be five months old tomorrow. What I'm curious about is if this means it is time to get him neutered? I was waiting until he was six months old, which is the time that my roommate's dad (a vet) said to get it done. But is it possible to have him neutered too late? I don't think he is marking at all... he just likes to pee with his leg lifted up! (which, by the way, is SO cute!) Well, thanks for the advice, like always!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Having him neutered does not mean he will return to squatting to urinate. Mine were neutered at 6 mths. One waited longer to start lefting his leg...the othere did it from 3 months on. They do NOT mark inside my house. To be honest...a marker will squat to mark too. Ramsey is my female...she has always marked outdoors.

| I just don't understand the difference between the two. How do you know if they are marking or peeing?

| A five months he can be neutered. Some do it at four months. Yes, there is such a thing as neutering too late. One they start leg lifting, marking is the next step. Once behaviors are started, it can be hard or impossible to stop them. |

| I was one of those that questioned the difference between lifting his leg to pee and actually marking. Winston has ALWAYS lifted his leg to pee, and ONLY outside...he is 100% potty trained, he NEVER pees in the house. But anyway, he was neutered at 6 months...I think you're fine to wait. How much does he weigh? Don't neuter yet if he's tiny.

YT 2000 Club Member | Tucker was lifting his leg at 3.5 months and started marking right before I had him fixed at 17 weeks old, but only outside. The difference is, that when the start to mark they pee little bit everywhere, like on trees, where other dogs have gone etc. Tucker would squrit alittle bit out where ever my toy poodle peed. Since he has been fixed he doesnt mark anymore but he still lifts his leg to pee.

| See that's the thing...Winston is an only dog in a fenced in yard...so if he's marking...he's just covering up his own scent. I say he's just peeing, because he really goes, when he goes...not just a tiny squirt. He's actually funny, because he'll be standing there with his leg hiked so high and he turns to look at me, as if to say "see mommy, I'm a good boy...going potty outside"!!! What a hoot he is...

| UPDATE! I just took him out to pee, and I actually think he is marking! He peed a tiny bit in about three different places!!! He doesn't do that inside if he has an accident. He'll squat when he pees inside... I don't know what to do now! AH! LOL.

| My sons yorkie started lifting his leg at around 12 weeks, unfortunately neutering him never did stop him. The vet thought it would, but, they were wrong. He's now 1 1/2 years old and still goes around the house lifting it |

Thor's Human Donating Member | When Thor really needs to go, he squats, but he enjoys marking things outside too. I think even if a dog is inside a fenced area, he'll mark. Instinct tells them to mark the boundries of their territory. It's just that in a city, dozens of dogs are trying to claim the same territory.

| Winston has definitely claimed his territory!!! LOL...But I still think he's just peeing...and he is 100% trained to go potty outside...has been since he was 8 weeks old. He has never had an accident, let alone marked indoors.

Well, then I guess I won't be too worried if neutering doesn't necessarily get rid of marking, and (knock on wood) he hasn't marked inside the apartment.

| Achilles started lifting his leg around 6 months and i agree its the cutest thing too! I was thinking "Aww you are becoming a big boy now!" He does mark his territory several times throughout our walk as well--what can you say typical male!
