Hey!

Have any of you tried Petzlife?

I just got some... and am going to start using it on my babies. Izze has some missing teeth---and she will be be 9 in january...so don't want to risk anesthesia with her. So, I am going to try this product and hope it works. I have 4 dogs, and teeth cleaning is mighty pricy (and my anxiety is much worse).

So, just curious to see if any of you tried it. i will take pictures and update you with our progress.

Yes, several of us have used or do use it.

There are two sides to using it though.

Some say that it is an excellent product and they believe it is made it possible to not need to do dentals. They think that there isn't much risk as long as it is used correctly.

Then others believe that grain alcohol is way too high on the ingredient list (2nd after water) and it is just not something they want their dogs to be swallowing. Even a board certified animal dentist told one of our members that it is not something he would use.

I bought it and have stopped using it.
It just isn't something I want Ellie to have.
Petzlife says that they have no reported side effexts but if you type it in the search on YT, there are at least a couple reports of stomach upset from it...

I'm conflicted. I think that all your points are valid and I appreciate your feedback.
I am concerned though with the risk of anesthesia... so i don't know what to do! I don't want to put them under all the time...and with Izze (my york) and chachi (my chi), it will need to be done annually... With Suzie---every other year...and with Molly---who knows. She needs one now...but I really don't want to do put her under. She's seven years old...

Alchol doesn't seem like something i'd want to give my dogs either... oy!
Are there any life altering side effects? I mean, if i use it until their plaque disappears...would that be harmful?

And thanks for the feedback from the denist. Do you think that he was honest, or do you think that he just wants more clients?

The dentist who told one of our members that is the son of the vet who developed the parvo vaccine:

Reactions are dose dependent:
Alcohol (Ethanol) Poisoning - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company!

It is used in many products to activate different things.
I'm not sure how many veterinary products it is used in but I would be very careful.

I understand the anesthesia concern.
I have that with Ellie too and there are people who have had such great results with Petzlife that it is tempting to go back to it. I guess it comes down to what is the bigger risk, anesthesia or grain alcohol. And if you use Petzlife a few times, it might be okay but I really don't like to take chances. If grain alcohol is used in amounts that your dog can't handle or for too long, I don't think we can be sure that it is safer than anesthesia. Maybe talk to your vet about using it?

I would not mess with dentals as if you do not do them it can affect kidney, heart, and liver and my 4 1/2 year old maltese almost lost every tooth yesterday out of my fear of having dentals and anesthesia - she has gum disease now because of my fear. I think the safest thing is go to a board certfied dentist. I signed up for care credit and it is 12 mos no interest so i do recommend it and it is very easy at CareCredit® Healthcare Finance - Payment Plans and Financing for Cosmetic Surgery, Dental, Vision, Hearing, Veterinary & Other Medical Procedures. I will never mess around with this again after watching my demi have to have her teeth removed and no stitches so they were so bad he said they just about fell out with no effort on his part

i cried so much over this as it was my fear that caused this. Make sure they use propofol, iso or sevoflurine (iso better for small dogs), catheterization, iv fluids, full chemistry and cbc panel, and urinalysis done prior to anesthesia. This is the safest. If your dog has high Globulins that is a sign of gum disease and if bun is high that is a sign of kidney issues -- I have learned the hard way - get to the best as a board certified is the best way to go i believe as that is all they do all day long every day

oh i was using petzlife for a year prior to her having this done as well -- alcohol dries out the gums in human and dogs and why petzlife is not liked for grain alcohol - also rosemary is in it so dogs prone to seizures should not use anything with rosemary in it --

the board certified i saw yesterday said there have not been any medical studies done on this product and he also does not even sell the pv3 dental vaccine as he does not like it which was a relief as i did not want that used on my dog and i told him no dental vaccine and he said no prob i do not sell it here

Crystal you are correct. Dr. Carmichael told me in my follow up visit that Petzlife is 40 proof. I have stopped using it.

I bought these two products (recommended from another thread, where they too went to a B.Cert Dental Vet ~ while I wait to for his toothpaste

yes that was me

I interviewed two board certified dentist and the one recommended those two things and i will check with the other who did procedure to see if he also recommends that as well

The Dentist I went to is in the process of making an effective toothpaste for dogs that includes the proper amount of Chlorhexidine. So while I wait for that, I took the advice given to you and bought those two items. I am curious about that Mini Toothbrush

and since the MaxiGuard had no alcohol (but it also does NOT include Chlorhexidine) I figured I would get it and test it out (I was placing an order anyway

I won't use this on Izze.... but My chi--maybe... I mean, he has really, really bad teeth and he lose 11 teeth last year

He is a big chi though and if i use a tiny amount short term---i hope there aren't any side effects!
I am going to have some pics of izze up soon... we got our new winter coats in! she looks so cute.

This subject has been talked about so many times on YT. I will say that
those who knock it are those who's dog's teeth are infected or have already
been removed. I have been using it for three years with absolutely no
side effects at all. The amount of grain alcohol is minimal because it a spritz
not a cupfull! To drink the whole bottle would cause problems I'm sure but
the amount used 2x weekly will not effect your dog. Buddy has and I have
said this many time beautiful white teeth with no tartar of gum disease
at all. It does not dry out the gums! I drink alcohol and my gums are not
dried out. I believe what your doctor;s says but there are other point's of view as well.
I will continue using it to prevent Buddy from gum disease, kidney failure
and being put under, which many die on the table, until it is proven
this product is harmful to our pet;s. I think those who use it have the
best testimony on it's use.
Doctor's can't make money if pet's are healthy can they?
Please remember there are always two sides to every story written.
You have to do what you have to do but please don't make it sound
like your dog will die if this product is used. That is just not the case.

This is not entirely true...My yorkie has not had any teeth removed and his teeth are not in any danger right now, and I don't feel comfortable with Petzlife...But then again, my yorkie is liver compromised, so I have to be extremely careful with him. Alcohol, no matter how small of an amount, is not good for him.
As most mentioned already, there are two schools of thought on this issue, and each of us has to make our own decisions
