| My yorkie has occasional/normal clear drainage from his eyes, but sometimes the smell of it is really bad. I currently have him on Angels Eyes. Does anybody have any suggestions? Should I just wipe his eyes with plain water? Or does he have an infection? THANK YOU SO MUCH Melissa

| Donating YT 30K Club Member | I would gently wash his face with water every day and that should help. I switched to distilled water instead of tap water and that seemed to help cut down on some of the tearing.

| I think he has an infection. You should take him to the vet, or just call him. When eyes start to smell that means infection. |

| Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Harley has the same thing. It's a funky smell. He's all black but I can see the wetness. I wipe it everyday with tear cleaner, that the groomer mentioned. They also told me the tear production can get worse from food with dyes in theem. Thats what causes the red color. Also they have pills you can give them to help reduce it. I'm going online to see about it.

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would def. go to the vet. A smell can very often mean conjunctivitis, which is very irritating if you've ever had it - they need a prescription ointment for 10 days to get rid of it.

| Does anyone use the product Angel Eyes? I was told to use this for the tearing and staining of eye tearing...it has an antibiotic in it, so that should help with the smell...(bacteria)Is it safe to always use this product? Since it does contain an antibiotic? Thanks

| The smell is caused by the moisture turning into what they call a 'red yeast infection.' I have found if you take people eye drops (cheap brand will do) - use this to clean the stained area. Works better than any otc products I've found for dogs. I believe its the boric acid that does the job. Which is in all eye drops. If you could find a very gentle eye wash (basically boric acid) to wash out your furbabies eyes from time to time, it might help to. Sometimes there could be a eyelash turned inwards which is causing an irritation to the eye causing it to react by running. Also, stopped up tear glands can cause this. You should really check with your vet on these two items. Also, allergies could be the problem. Yorkies are so low to the ground, they encounter. Stay away from corn grains in dog food. Hope this helps. Yorkie Mom Linda |

| ♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | Good idea to go to the vet! I really think that's the first step. If you find out that it's not an infection, then you can begin the process of cleaning, etc... Angels' Eyes is NOT okay to use ALL the time. My vet said to use it for no more than one month. All the Angel's Eyes does is clear out the color (from the red yeast bacteria in the eyes), but it doesn't stop the tearing! There have already been lots of different reasons for tearing suggested above, so one of them is most likely your culprit. (If beet root is an ingredient in your dog food, it could be causing the red stains too!) Also, there are dogs that are just genetically predispositioned to tear, so you may not every get rid of it.....distilled water and a food with fewer ingredients and less "known" allergens is your best bet at trying to figure out why and if it can be "fixed". As far as wipes go, there are several products sold that you use to moisten a cotton ball and then wipe away the tear "trail", as I call it. John Paul Pet makes wipes, but I don't know how good they are. I'd stay away from using baby wipes, as most of those contain at the very least fragrance that can irritate the eyes. I liked the suggestion of just using regular old eye drops for people, moistening a cotton cosmetic pad or cotton ball (found in the cosmetics section of most stores, like walmart), and then wiping away the tears. That's a great idea....I think I'll try that too! If you choose to buy a "pet" eye product, make sure it is safe if it gets in the eyes. A LOT of them say to KEEP OUT OF EYES!!, which is very odd to me, since you obviously have to get close to the eyes to use their product. So, vet is the first step, water and food change may be the next, and eye drops as a tear stain cleaner would be helpful too. And if the vet is okay with your using Angel's eyes, then don't use it for more than a month! It IS a low grade antibiotic, so it shouldn't be used all the time!!!! (Just think, would it be ok for you to stay on a broad spectrum antibiotic all the time? No. In fact, that would be really bad, because then you could get ill with bacteria that have grown resistant to that type of antibiotic. At the very least, you would have to take a much stronger antibiotic to take care of it, and at the worst there may not be another option to treat that specific thing. It's best to use antibiotics only when you must!)

| He is normal... Of course, when I took him to the vet the eye area did not smell ( don't you hate that). Doc said it was unusual to have a smell form the eyes and asked me if I was smelling something else...Haha nooooo, it's the eyes...he said it was normal to have a musty smell from eyes time to time. I think I am over sensitive to it...my cleanfreak disease...haha.... Anyways, good news he is okay. Doc said to wash face with warm water and wash cloth. No baby wipes, etc...he also said no Angel eyes, no distilled water or mineral free water...hmmmmmm...???????? My breeder recommended Angel Eyes...DOES ANYONE ELSE USE ANGEL EYES FOR YOUR YORKIE? I have heard both bad and good...

Your vet told you not to use it, and that should really be enough. Vets, IMHO, tend to be flippant about a lot of things or will market something to you as safe when it really isn't nearly as safe as they say.....when they say NOT to use something, however, that is probably advice you can trust! (Like I said, they seem to be more likely to *wrongly* advise the safety of certain products, but they are a lot LESS likely to *wrongly* advise to NOT use something.) Using Angel's Eyes is *probably* ok if your pup is healthy (which can be confirmed with a complete blood chemistry panel and CBC, and a Bile Acid Test--Yorkies are 31 times more likely to have liver problems than any other breed, and use of a product like this in a dog that's liver compromised could be VERY detrimental to her health)....but only for a short period of time. Like I said before, there is no way it would be okay for you to be on any kind of antibiotic forever or even for several months at a time, UNLESS there was a very, very good reason AND a doctor advised and prescribed it, and even then they would normally check your blood work several times while you're on it just to make sure your liver is doing okay! After having said all that about being able to trust a vet when he advises AGAINST something, I just realized that he advised to NOT use distilled water. I wonder what his reasoning behind that is.....I do and I know a lot of others do too. I know people who only drink distilled water too..... I would be very interested to know why he thinks that's not ok??

| Funny how if you ask 10 different people you'll get 10 different answers...haha ...I am still not sure what to do, you know..... Anyways, no distilled water because he felt normal tap water was good enough. I've had other yorkie owners tell me different. I think I will take advice from everyone and just try some different things...you know that always works... Thank you so much for all the great advice. I think I need to tackle his dry skin next...the doc's advice for that was not to bath him for a month! HUH? I've tried oatmeal soaps(goodones) and right now I am using Espree...but, still dry flakey skin...Any suggestions??
