| Thanks Guys... Went to the vet today... Just wanted to update everyone on Chewys skin condition. I wrote a few days about about how she has little pimple bumps that she chews on and causes scabs. Well i was going to wait and shampoo her in a special shampoo but last night we ddint sleep AT ALL!!!! She stayed up all night chewing on her back and paws so I left work early today to take her to the vet. He said lookslike an allergy and sent me to a specialist. Were going on Friday at 11 30 am. Questions: How do they do an allergy test for dogs? Should I bring in her food and a list of all the other things she eats? Help... I need to be prepared. Should I maybe not feed her before the test? Nutrical? Advice please. |

| I would call the Vet and ask them what questions they will be asking you, explain to them that you just want to be prepared. Maybe they can fax you a copy of there forms that you will have to fill out. We tend to forget a lot of things on the spot, and this way you will have ample time. |

| Thats a great Idea... I dont know if theyll be that cooperative though... its an emergency clinic and the girl i spoke to on the phone today missed the class on customer service She hung up on me the first time... then gave me the only date she had available.... assured me nothing would open up for months so take it or leave it and then tried to get me off the phone ASAP!!! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | LOL well that was rude of her. I'd call and ask if she should be fasted. we ask for that at our referral place. at the dermatologist, if that's who she's seeing, they can do skin scraps and biopsies, and if those don't get good results they will sometimes do punch biopsies of the skin. i think most likely they will do skin scraps which doesn't hurt at all. i hope they can find out what's itching your puppy.

| Working at a vets office in southern Cailfornia, I saw a lot of this. My pug, had the very same reaction. It was so hard to see him in discomfort. I changed his food, put him on prednisone so on and so forth. I did an allergy test for him and he had allergies to certain grasses that were in our area. But the culprit turned out to be fleas.. Although we kept our home in immaculate condition and treated him it was an on going cycle. Especially during the summer when the breeding season was high for fleas. My dog had an allergy to fleas. We moved to the desert and the problem was gone. His skin cleared up, coat was shiny again and he was taken off prednisone. It is too hot here for fleas. I hope this is not your case, but if all else fails ask your vet about this..good luck. |

| Are they going to automatically test for the common allergens such as fleas? I doubt that there are fleas around here right now and she only goes out once a week or so with Fronline on at all times.. Knock on wood... but shes never had a flea on her!! |

| When I had a terrier mix he didn't start with allergies until he was seven but when I took him to the vet's they did skin scrappings and sent them out to test for whatever they showed. Here is what came back and what they said he was allergic to: 1. Horse hair 2. Dog hair (how can you be allergic to yourself) 3. Duck feathers 4. Grass 5. Oak Trees and some other's kinds of trees 6. Dust The list went on and on. I didn't know weather to laugh or cry! They put him on a steroid called azium (s) and I was never able to get him off of it. He became addicted to it until the day he died at 16yrs. He has sores all over him. You couldn't even pet the poor dog. I hope you get answers. This was 12yrs or more so hopefully times have changed. Good luck, |

| Oscar, our goldoen retriever, has skin allergies. He used to scratch to the point of opening himself up to staph infections. The put him on steroids as well and antibiotics for infection if there was any. This caused him to grow into a VERY BIG boy, he was on steroids for over a year since he was 6 months old, he didn't get fat, just extra large for the breed, 110lbs at one point. We eventually decided to take him off of the steroids and we can usually control the problem with supplements and coat tonic.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali had the blood allergy tests and they teted her for environmental and internal type allergies and they came back she wasn't allergic to anything they tested for. She is still scratching all the time even on Benydryl and other meds the vet gave us. They said they can;t test for every thing so it could be we just haven't identified what she is allergic to. I hope you can determine what is causing it. I know how hard it is on them and us.
