Oscar, our goldoen retriever, has skin allergies. He used to scratch to the point of opening himself up to staph infections. The put him on steroids as well and antibiotics for infection if there was any. This caused him to grow into a VERY BIG boy, he was on steroids for over a year since he was 6 months old, he didn't get fat, just extra large for the breed, 110lbs at one point. We eventually decided to take him off of the steroids and we can usually control the problem with supplements and coat tonic.
