| Help with EXTREMELY dry brittle hair my new Pommie has the worst hair I can imagine on a Pommie. His hair is brittle dry like cotton wook and no shine to it, when I comb the hair is literally breaking in the brush. I dont know if it has to do with the poor food the man i bought him from fed him, but he sure didnt get a good start with his coat. Bandit's coat is lusturous and shiney and silky to the touch, not like a yorkie but still very soft and silky, Bijour is so dry. I have been giving him 1gm of cod liver oil once a week but I wonder what else I cna do to improve this dryness? His nails are also brittle when I cut them so my assumption is it has to do with what he was fed after weaning which is obviously not good . he is currently on a mixed Royal Canin kibble meaning a few of the varieties mixed up which he loves and yoghurt, and raw meat bones. Any ideas ladies and gents Oh, Bandit was fed home cooked and raw when I got him and was raised on Royal Canin Puppy Last edited by soccbydo; 02-12-2008 at 06:04 AM. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmmm....well, I haven't heard the best of things about cod liver, myself - and at once per week, I'm not sure you can keep it in a proper concentration to make it therapeutic. What about a salmon oil daily, could you try that instead? I have heard that cod oil on a regular basis can build up and become toxic - but that it can be safe at tiny doses, for whatever that's worth. Also, what about trying a leave-in spray-on hair conditioner (human)?

I am such a dufus, it is called Lachs oil here which is actually salmon oil DUHHH silly me, it is the vet who said to give it once a week as to much of any oil can cause some Vit A deficiencies or somethign to that nature DONT quote me on that. But something down that line I take the cod live roil I was told human hair conditioner is bad to the bones and not to use it on dogs cuz of the Ph Balance Last edited by soccbydo; 02-12-2008 at 01:04 PM.

| Since Poms are double coated they need to be brushed at least three times a week. Misting first with water and a little conditioner added. Start from the neck and brush backwards. The hair will fall back into place. The misting and brushing helps keep any dirt from drying out the coat. Use a bristle or pin brush. Only shampoo not more than twice a month and use a very mild shampoo and a good conditioner. Their undercoat is shed once or twice a year, but they do shed all the time, which makes brushing important. You can even use a dry shampoo when necessary. Add omega 3 and 6 oils to the diet each day. |

Thanks, I do brush Bandit taht way and he has only been bathed two times I think since I got him last July, he does not smell stink at all and his coat is lovely. I brush bandit sometimes every day depending on how much grass he rolls around in or sometimes 3 to 5 times a week. Bijour the same every second day, his hair is just brittle. I will do the misting, I had not done this before. I use what is called a slicker brush is that the same as pin?

| Maybe you could try asking that question on a Pomeranian forum. I'm sure they could give you some great advice on what products work best. Wish I knew of a good site but maybe someone else on here knows of one.

Not shampooing for so long can actually dry out the hair. Maybe you can find someone who actually "shows" Poms to give you some pointers. Not a regular breeder.

| I have a Pom and that doesn't sound right at all that his coat should be so dry and brittle. Yahoo groups has several Pom forums. The slicker is used to get the undercoat and matting out, I use the pin for regular general brushing ( it alone will not keep him mat free) and when I find a mat I use a small metal comb with closely spaced teeth after using conditioner to get it out. |

| http://pets.groups.Yahoo.com/group/PomWorld/ This is a good Pom site but it's private so you have to ask to join it and cannot get in until they accept you, which could take a few days. Just so you understand. |
