| Never Brush a Yorkie's Hair when it's Dry?? Hi all, I've heard from several people, as well as read on several internet sites that you should never brush a Yorkie's hair when it's dry. Can someone (anyone) explain to me the reason(s) for this? As much as I'm hearing it and reading it... I still can't find a reason that sounds the least bit legitimate, and certainly none that make any sense. lol! I'm sure there IS a legitimate reason for not brushing it when it's dry...but I'd like to know what that reason is. Thanks PS - Bella does just fine without any sort of brushing (she's not full Yorkie and still very young. Her hair never tangles.) However, we are getting an AKC Yorkie in March...and Bella's hair I'm sure will grow as she ages...so I'd like to learn ALL I CAN about grooming. I won't be taking my pups to a groomer...ever. I want to do it all myself, so I want to know the answer to this question...before my curiosity keels me over. |

Yorkies have hair. We have hair. Our hair is more prone to damage & breakage if brushed wet. So it seems the same would be true for yorkies. I think the misunderstanding comes from people trying to dry brush out a yorkie with DIRTY hair, as you are likely to cause some breakage doing that. I'm sure HOW you brush/comb hair, either wet or dry, has an impact on the health of the hair shaft also.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I've read the breeders who show say that, as well as "never comb a wet coat", and I think I can understand that one better. Wet coats tangle easily. There are all sorts of dos and don’ts when you are trying to grow coat, but for the typical pet owner, I wouldn't worry about it. There are misting sprays you can use if the hair gets too much static electricity when brushing dry.

| I agree with Kazzy and Nancy's points. Since my boys are pets, I do what works best for us. I don't brush dirty hair (for the most part), I don't brush or comb wet hair, but I do use brushing sprays on the brush/comb half of the time. When Max is dirty and needs to be brushed, I bathe him first. With Teddy, I have to detangle a bit before I get him wet. It's all trial and error. As one exhibitor here has written many times, each coat is different.

| You are not suppose to brush it dry because it causes the hair to break. If I understand correctly.

| I believe you are correct, and I think a conditioning spray is recommended. It's not that the hair should be wet, wet.

| I think you're not supposed to brush it dry dirty, but you must take out the mats before you bathe then, otherwise you set in the mats even more, esp with a cotton coated pup. So use a conditioning spray. I've found that coconut oil take out tangles pretty well too. On clean or semi clean hair, it's just easier to brush with some spray on first. Kind of like lubricant, makes the brush glide in the hair easier. Brushing a coat wet with just water I don't think would be good either.

| I think that is correct too. I use Yorkie Sheen and just lightly mist Rosie's and Mikki's hair. It is a detangler so it is good about getting anything out. But I also brush their hair a minimum of twice a day. I know I am nuts.

| I could never understand it either, it seems to completely contravene what we're told about our own hair, so it's interesting to read the replies. |

YT Addict | Ive never heard of that before. I thought since they had hair and we have hair it would be the same. Ive always heard to not brush our hair when its wet because it's more prone to breakage. Hmmm, now im confused -.-

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I never brush Joey when he's actually wet, I use my hand to fluff the hair dry and as it drys, I use the brush. There's no pulling of the hair when you do it this way. The idea of this is you never want to break a hair when you are growing a coat for show. It's really that that urgent for we pet owners.

| Ok, I am trying to remember everything but can't remember where I got it from. It may have been on the Yorkie Splash and Shine website. If I am wrong, anyone feel free to correct me. My understanding is you brush before you bath to get out the mats, you dry-using fingers to loosen any tangles, then you brush again using a detangler. There are many, I use Yorkie sheen. Then when brushing in between baths, you need to use the detangler then brush. Again, that is my understanding. Honestly, I also think it depends on the cut of the Yorkie. I think I have to do more with my Rosie because of her long hair. Mikki is a lot less maintenance because she has such short hair.
