I agree with Kazzy and Nancy's points.
Since my boys are pets, I do what works best for us. I don't brush dirty hair (for the most part), I don't brush or comb wet hair, but I do use brushing sprays on the brush/comb half of the time.
When Max is dirty and needs to be brushed, I bathe him first. With Teddy, I have to detangle a bit before I get him wet.
It's all trial and error. As one exhibitor here has written many times, each coat is different.
