| Wet eyes and face Is there a product which will help with keeping the eye area from getting wet? Any help would be appreciated. Also, when she drinks water, not only is her entire face wet, but she drips water everywhere. Sometimes, she just wants to step in the water bowl (small) and spill it on the floor! lol! Like wading in a swimming pool... My groomer told me that a professional show dog secret is to buy a guinea pig water container. It hangs vertically with a ball inside that rotates to keep their mustaches from getting wet. I would like to try to find one of these but haven't yet.

| When I first got my yorkie, he had problems with wet eyes. A friend told me to give him distilled water only to drink. I thought she was crazy, but in desperation I tried it. My vet also gave me a pill bottle of tetracycline powder and told me to use a teeny tiny pinch of it mixed with his food once a day for a week. She said it was basically the same as Angel Eyes that I was planning to purchase, and said she gave it to all her clients with white dogs who got tear stains. I'm not sure whether the distilled water or the tetracycline stopped the wet eyes, but within a week his eyes had cleared up. It's been nearly a year and we've never had another problem with it. I do give him distilled water exclusively though. Google it for more info... I believe a lot of people use it to prevent wet eyes and stains in their white colored dogs.

| Wet eyes and face Thank you for your help. Even though Lily is a Yorkie and isn't white, the tetracycline may still help with the eye drainage. I have some Eye Envy on hand that I purchased when I had a white poodle and it was terrific in removing stains. I many try it just to see if it helps with keeping the fur dry. If all else fails I could also keep the hair shorter on her face -- I just hate to do that because it will change her look. Cherie & Lily

| Her tear ducts may be closed. Ask your vet! |

| I'm sorry. I didn't mean to confuse you with the "white dog" comment. I just meant white dogs such as poodles, maltese, etc. that are prone to develope tear stains from their eyes. They are the breeds my vet normally prescribes the tetracycline powder for. Like I said, I used both the tetracycline AND use distilled drinking water both on my Yorkie, so I'm not sure which of the two took care of his tearing. I just know his eyes rarely ever get wet anymore. I would try the Eye Envy first and see if that doesn't do the trick. If not, try the distilled water and if that doesn't work, ask your vet for a bit of tetracycline powder. I wouldn't cut the hair around Lily's eyes. I think you can clear up the tearing issues using one of the above methods. I've used the pet water bottles you mentioned for my flying squirrels and they work okay. I've never used them for a dog. They are easily found at Target, PetSmart, or most animal/feed store carry them, usually with the rodent supplies.

| Wet face and eyes Thank you for your help. I'll try the Eye Envy first, and then if that doesn't work, I'll get the tetracycline and buy some distilled water. Thanks, Cherie

| My little guy has the same problem. Ohhh ... I plan on trying the angel eyes ... good sugg. Thanks you guys. But I find that trimming the hair in the corner of his eyes and keeping it trimmed reduces a LOT of wetness. |

To the OP- Does she have red-like tear stain? or does wetness just come from her eyes and does it have an odor? I own maltese, and I know alot about tear stains. My first malt had tear stains, my second malt has block tear ducts, so wetness comes from her eyes. These are two totally different things! If her tear ducts are blocked, the watery stuff (tears) is clear, but it turns the hair a brownish / redish color. It has an odor, only when it is fresh and still damp. Only a vet can fix this. Eye Envy, Angel Eyes, ect., will not help that problem. They only help the red-like staining. You can try Eye Envy, it works for some people and doesn't for others. If your dog has tear staining, there are many other natural ways to help with tear stains without putting antibiotics in there system. Read through this thread on the maltese forum about tear staining:Spoiled Maltese - the largest maltese dog forum and website. Here's another: Spoiled Maltese - the largest maltese dog forum and website An quote from the site: "Once your pup stops teething and you find he still has tearstain problems, you can try Tylan powder from your vet. Angel Eyes is a dilluted form of Tylan powder that contains both Tylan and beef liver to make it taste better. I would recommend going with the regular Tylan over the Angel Eyes because it is MUCH cheaper and seems to work faster. Usually you will do a 10-day course of the Tylan, and if the new growth doesn't come out white, you can do another 10-day course. After doing two courses, if there is still new staining, there is an underlying problem such as allergies, tear duct blockage, shape of the eye, eyelashes growing inward toward the eye, etc. Keep in mind that Tylan is an antibiotic and there may be long-term consequences that you will have to consider. Any of the topical eye treatments don't seem to work well, and this includes Eye Envy, Stay White, Angel Eyes, etc. I think only a few people have had long-term success with these methods. Yes, a teaspoon of plain nonfat/lowfat (organic if available) yogurt can help improve the staining." This is from a top maltese breeder website, basically explains more in detail causes and cures: Tear Staining: The Causes & Cures Oh and about her getting her face wet when she drinks, it's fine, she'll dry! Don't make her drink from a guinea pig water bottle! LOL I did that with my first maltese puppy and I don't think myone ponder could get enough water. So with my maltese now, she is in full coat all the way to the foor and she drinks from a bowl! Yes, her face gets wet, but she drys. She loves lappin' her water up. LOL What your groomer told you about show dogs maybe be true. Some professions handlers do that, but then again, most professional handlers don’t really care about the well-being of the dog. There job is to get that dog showed and collect the money afterwards. Show dogs also have to put up with hours of grooming, hair getting wrapped, ect. Show dogs don’t sit on their owners lap and watch tv with them, they don’t sleep in bed with their owners, ect. You don’t want to do what professional handlers do. Trust me, your baby will be just fine! Oh and my maltese is completely white! Hope this helps! | |
