| Brushing/Grooming/War Time... Ok need some advice here... a) what kind of brushes do you all use on your furballs? Nozzle is about 16 weeks old and has just started needing consistent brushing...I have a brush but it takes out a lot of hair and I'm worried about that. I started getting him a little damp and using a little leave in conditioner...that seems to help a bit. b) How do you groom your dogs without warring? That is the ONLY time Nozzle and I don't get along lately...he hates getting wet, he hates being brushed and I try to keep it short but I have to hold him down... I end up feeling like a terrorist after we're done! |

| I had the same thing going on here, but here is what has helped...routine routine routine. I think Yorkies are like kids, they need structure and a schedule. So now the girls know it's out to potty, Maya has breakfast, not Mika. WHile Maya has breakfast Mika gets to run the house beyond the kitchen gate by herself as a reward. Then it is Mom's computer time, and their play time. Then when Mommies coffee runs out it is the GROOMING TIME. I use Ice on Ice detangler, I start the bristle brush which is like the one you brush your hair with, then I use a wide tooth comb which does not hurt as much, and I spray and go a section of hair at a time until I have most of the tangles out. The one they hate is the slicker brush, but it is last, and now that I have learned to get the tangles out first, and talk soothingly to them while I am doing the slicker, and now that it mostly glides through, it is no longer their enemy. Then Mika gets to go outside and romp whiile Maya gets groomed. Now when I am doing Mika, Maya is on the floor whinning for her turn....grooming time has turned around here. Oh and grooming time is always followed by a good treat for being good, and lots of praise about how pretty they look.

See, sometimes I am an idiot...Iiiiii wouldn't use a slicker brush on MY hair first!!!! That's so smart! I have a slicker brush...I need to go get some combs/paddle brushes for him. Thank you (and I'm sure Nozzle does too!)!!!

| GEt a wide toothed comb, and normal one, and then they have one that is fine fine fine toothed. I need all 3 for different circumstances. Then I have this one that is a bristle brush like the one you use on your hair, and the other side is a rather wide toothed wire brush. Also they say never brush dry hair, so I mist with the ice on ice real well first. I also follow each grooming session with a good spray of baby powder scented cologne (this is for mommie ).

| I comb very slow and gentle and croon all the while about what a "good girl" you are , and how pretty you are going to be, and ok ok I'm not gonna hurt, when I get to a nap. It's a process girl. LOL ALso, I have found with my lazy tail that doing it everyday makes a big difference, it's staying less nappy, and these two tussle and play a lot and love outdoors. I also think, and I may be wrong, that it is helping it to grow and look prettier. My mom also advocated giving them a boiled egg everyone once in while, swore it made the coat prettier. What do the experts say???

I have to work on being calm and patient...those are not my best mommy traits, so I know a lot of the war is my fault. But I will try this starting tomorrow!!! Thank you!!!

| I had to take a computer commercial break because the girls were getting restless and I realized it was "grooming time", it went off without a hitch with only Mika growling at the slicker brush once until she realized it wasn't hurting, and then she acted nice. Each one got their treat and went outside and now I have two beautiful baby powder smelling non-tangled girls. Of course the first thing they did was started wrestling and rubbing their heads on the pillow trying to get their top knots out......oh well

YT 1000 Club Member | I've been thru the horrors of brushes. Some of those will make me bleed if I grabbed them by the bristles. Forget that. I got Roxie a pin brush and she looks forward to being brushed with that. But she doesn't have a thick matting coat. I could go a couple of days without brushing her and she won't have a single tangle. My sister in law is a groomer in Florida and she orders her brushes from Les Poochs™ "Pooch" Brushes. They are a little more expensive but those are really nice brushes. Probably the last brush you'll have to buy for a long time. |

| Domo! Thanks for the site! I will have to get some temporary brushes/combs for now (takes so long to get stuff in from the States) but I will definitely look at getting some of those. Nozzle and I discovered that he is a fan of eggs this morning! So we'll have those every so often. When I got him from the store (live in Japan--I don't even know where to start looking for a breeder here), they gave me a bag of food for him. I don't know what kind it is--the writing's in Japanese--but I think it's Royal Canin, which I think I've heard is good (?). |

| Update So yesterday I went and got a double sided brush and a wide tooth comb...I'm afraid yesterday's session with Nozzle was painful for him (we got out so many knots!) but today's was a breeze! I feel *less* like a terrorist but I don't think Nozz agrees...he shakes through the whole session and the drying and until I can distract him with a ball or his porcupine.... |

| I like it, it sort of smoothes their hair out and tames it down. WHen they come from the "groomer", I always have to do it to them cause they look kinda wild, and Miss Mika has untameable hair. Listen, I just realized you are in Japan. My daughter moved there about 6 weeks ago. She is in Kyoto and Osaka on vacation right now pending starting her new job April 6. Maybe you two could correspond. The reason I have Mika is because taking her there would have involved too too much hassle.

Ok so here's grooming blog, day 4 since new brushes...it takes maybe a QUARTER of the time it was taking!!! It's been super easy. Unfortunately, we've made noooooo progress with Nozzle...he hates it just as much...starts shaking before we even start! He doesn't even like being dried! I, on the other hand, feel a little better...maybe only 15% terrorist while we are brushing. Much better. But I still have bad days, I lost a lot of patience today and scared him...I suck at this! He's still laying here with me though...that's good right?

Yorkie Yakker | Question on grooming What can I spray on the coat that will have take the knots out? I have had 6 Yorkies and never had a problem brushing their coats until I got Rosebuddy. She was a year old and I guess they did not brush her often. Not sure, but she hates to be brushed on her back. I checked, no booboos. Her tummy and underparts get very matted. Can you please tell me the best brushes, combs an products you have had success with? Thanks, Edie |
