Confused Hate's Car Rides

Any suggestions on what to do to calm Izzy down when we are in the car? He whines everytime we are in the car and it is driving me nuts. I mean you would think I was torturing him. He stands up and tries to climb out, he shakes and cries non stop. I almost dont want to take him anywhere except to the vet and the groomer.

I used to put him in his carrier and he hated that. So, I bought a car seat for him thinking it would help but no luck. I have the outwardhound seat. He tries to climb over to sit on my lap. Before I try out another car seat, is there anything I can do to calm him. Ive tried treats, chew sticks, tried to rub him talk to him but nothing helps. It's like he is frantic and wants to get out!

My Zsa-Zsa did the same thing.
I started just going out to the car with her, put her in her seat and just sit there. I didnt look at her or say a thing but for 5 min we would just sit. Then I calmly get her out of the car go in the house and act like nothing happened. I did this every day but increased the time by a couple minutes. Then last week I took her for a drive around the block - then added a block and continued to act calmly. Today we went to the car drove around town for about 20 min and not a whimper. She sat looking out the window.
Good luck!!

I too have the same problem. My little Buddy becomes so upset everytime I take him in the car.....shaking and crying. I have read that frequent short rides could help with this. I have recently started to take Buddy with me to do school carpool every morning and afternoon....in hopes that he will eventually become use to the car. I hold him the entire time and talk very softly to him....this seems to calm him down a bit. Hopefully, our YT friends can make some other suggestions that will help us.

Karla - you are welcome to try my console car seat if you want to come for a visit. Sissy hated everything else. She wouldn't stay in the carrier, and hated the outward hound and almost hung herself trying to climb out!! But from the first with the Snoozer console, she goes right in and is good as gold!!!

Some ppl might think I'm crazy but have you ever tried singing to them? You really don't need to have a brill voice b/c they love u anyway, but make sure you keep the windows closed.
Mine as soon as we go in the car they sit on my lap while hubby drives and they go straight to sleep.
If anything ealse fails a firm no or stop that might do the trick. Just make sure they don't get even more scared.LOL

Milo is a newly converted car-tripper!

He did not like the car at all.

He would get so stressed out in a carrier--shaking, manic and usually made himself sick 2-3 times.

All this for brief 20 min trips.

Being on someone's lap made it a bit better. Still shaking, but no puking.

He seemed to like being able to see so I got a look-out/snoozer off of e-bay--used and hoped for the best.

We used it yesterday. We even had to put it in the back seat which he hates most of all.

We were out for just over 2 hours and not one problem and NO shaking.

He loved looking out the window and when he got tired, he flopped down and slept.

Our first stress free outing and we are all happy!

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try taking him in the car more often and for shorter trips. Simplyyorkies, I like the idea of sitting in the car for 5 min.

When I do take him we are in the car no longer than about 20 min. Yesterday we went to my cousins house and it was a 10 min drive...which felt like an hour!

Gordon did the same thing, he whined at first.
I started putting his favorite toys in his car seat and that seemed to help.
He has his own car seat and it sits up high enough for him to look out now......he loves it. I think when he was strapped down to the seat belt and couldn't see anything it was boring to him. Now that he sits up high enough to see out the window, he loves it.
Last Saturday I was at a red light and there was a woman in the second car in the next lane.....she kept blowing her horn. She blew her horn till she got Gordon's attention......then she was waving at him.
I thought it was so funny.......Gordon was standing in his seat , trying to get to her....of course the window was up. I have him in the backseat of my Tahoe and I keep the second window down for him to get fresh air.

For the most part, Sparky does well in riding, but he goes from my lap to the passenger seat. He likes to look out the window as well, but when a big truck or a big vehicle heads toward us in the other lane, he gets panicky. He wants to hide his face or get into the passenger seat or floor. Maybe I need to check into getting him a seat of his own.

Default hates car rides

You gotta desensitize him. Put a special toy in the car, put the dog in the car and don't go anywhere. Just let him be with his toy in the car for about 5 or l0 minutes. Next day same thing. Next day increase time in car with his speical toy. Keep doing this until he associates the car with the special toy. Take him on real short trips. To the mailbox, etc. Gradually increase time of trips in car. This is what a vet on a radio program said to do.

Thanks, I will try that. It's funny because he liked the car rides when I first brought him home. We drove all over town, to the pet store, visiting etc. It gradually got worse within the last few months.
