| What is going on with his butt?? Ok, I put a call into the vet, but they can not see me until Friday morning. I wanted to get everyones opinion of this, and see if maybe I can get some advice in the meantime. Percy has started "scooting" on his butt. Just a little but this morning. I almost thought he just had an itch. Then when he had his morning BM he was scooting around a lot. Then the scooting stopped, until this afternoon, when he was having his afternoon BM. After the BM, no more scooting. I made sure he was clean and checked out his bottom area. His little rectum is all swollen and puckered the wrong way. Does this mean his anal glands need to be done? I have never done them before, and when I asked the vet, they told me not to, and to let them do it. I checked his poop, (visually) and did not see any evidence of worms, pus, or anything that shouldn't be there. He is on preventative heartworm, and flea meds. I just changed his food, could this be causing it? As cute as it is to see them scooting on their little bottoms....I really want to figure out what this is.

| Sometimes that can mean they need their anal glands expressed. I would never try to do them...that's something I feel is best left to the vet or the groomer. |

BANNED! | I would have to say it sure sounds like his anal glands are full. I have one of my boys that has some issues with his ocassionally, and I drain them myself. It isnt hard to do this and it doesnt hurt my boy when I do his myself. Your vet might be able to show you how to do this yourself. | Once Ginger had a really bad allergic reaction to a rabies shot and the first symptom was the butt scooting and straining to go to the bathroom, then her muzzle and eyes started swelling up. But this just sounds like he needs his glands done. I hope your baby feels better soon.

| Annie was doing the same exact thing last week. I called the vet and took her right in. Sure enough it was her anal glands. He told me to give her a little bit of canned pumpkin and it would help. She has not done it since she was there. The funny thing was she usually cries the entire time we are at that vet but when he was working on her anal glands, she didn't cry at all, she honestly looked like she was smiling The vet said it must have made her feel better. | full means... well full each day fluid builds up in the anal sacks (they are not actually glands) and it is a liquid.. so when the pups poop and good soild poop.. they are emptied by the pressure of pooping... but if the poop is soft or maybe they skip a day and don't poop.. more liquid builds up and each day the liquid becomes thicker... thus making it more difficult to empty.. if they get too full they can burst.. but when the pup scoots... tis a good indication that they are too full for them and they will either poop and relieve the pressure... or keep scooting and need to go to the vet... i know way too mucha bout this because layla had big anal glad issues... however.. many vets feel that if this is a constant problem.. the sacks can be removed.. DO NOT let your vet talk you into this... it can lead to problems controlling their bowels... our vet suggested it.. i did some research and i'm VERY glad we decided not to..we just gave Layla a diet more rich in fibre... gave her fibre cereal in her morning wet food... carrots... fruit.. and she hasn't scooted in probably 3 or 4 months. |

BANNED! | If you get sick easily then you might want to let the vet do it for you, but I didnt find it to be that bad personally. All your doing is removing some built up liquid from the anal glands. Yes they are supposed to be expressed naturally, however some dogs arent able to do this naturally and need to be done manually once in awhile. I have heard that once you start doing it for them they can no longer do this on their own, and equally I have heard that they can still do this naturally with a diet higher in fiber to aid them. I guess it is just personal opinions to do whats is best for each individual dogs case. Mine was very relieved afterwards and he feels so much better and the swelling has gone down, so I opted for what I felt was right for him. |

| Out of curiosity how much does your vets charge you to do it? Mine charges $20 I think that is too much especially since I know how to do it, but my stomach turns every time

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Definitely sounds like anal glands. And be aware -- your GROOMER may express them without your knowledge!!!! Ask. I didn't because I'd never heard of such a thing -- until we had problems. And I wholeheartedly agree on the surgery thing. Ozzie now has a minor hernia that causes some periodic swelling. It was partially controlled by meds and by neutering him, but the only way to completely "fix" it may cause more problems in the long run (incontinence) per the vet. Good luck! I hope everything empties out OK. |
