If you get sick easily then you might want to let the vet do it for you, but I didnt find it to be that bad personally. All your doing is removing some built up liquid from the anal glands. Yes they are supposed to be expressed naturally, however some dogs arent able to do this naturally and need to be done manually once in awhile. I have heard that once you start doing it for them they can no longer do this on their own, and equally I have heard that they can still do this naturally with a diet higher in fiber to aid them. I guess it is just personal opinions to do whats is best for each individual dogs case. Mine was very relieved afterwards and he feels so much better and the swelling has gone down, so I opted for what I felt was right for him.
