| choking on mucous in nose, throat & mouth Gussie has had this as an ongoing problem, but it is getting so bad now and nothing seems to curb it. We are Panmycin (have been 3x day for two weeks) and he seemed to be clearing up but then it has come back with a vengeance. I have been using a food saver to suck the mucous out of his nose and throat so he can breathe......was up all night last night. Decided that it was time to let him go .....he's almost 18......and the vet is gone today and I won't go to a stranger! However, in sucking out his mouth there were some very fine hairs......can a yorkie get a hair ball. I have long fine hair and it gets everywhere.....and I've pulled it out of their food before, and they have passed hair. Any ideas or comments. I read about the cotton balls soaked in cream to gather glass......just an idea but could I do that, but attach a string and try to pull the cotton ball back up and possibly clear out the throat? I'm keeping him semi-comfortable by continuing to clear his mouth and nose and 24/7 lap time. We have an appointment with the vet tomorrow at 9 a.m. Before making the ultimate decision asking also if it could be teeth and if it would be worth trying to get rid of the ugly teeth. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | How sad for him and for you too ...I wish I had help to offer but I just don't know what to say....It sounds like you're doing all you can right now... On that cotten ball thing ...I've never heard of that personally and would never attempt something like that......What about trying a vaporizer ? I would check with your vet before doing ANYTHING ....but I sure hope you can make him more comfortable and the best of luck to you..... |

| This is horrbible. I know your little one is very uncomfortable...and I agree that you shouldn't try the cotton ball thing..... One note, my little guy gets congested sometimes, but all the vet does is put him on antiboitics or such....hate to keep doing that. They said it was more than likely allergies, but I have yet to find a "cure" for it. Course, it is nothing like you are talking about....just wanted to throw that out there. Good luck and I hope he gets better soon!

| Oh, gosh, he sounds real sick! Have you tried chlor-trimeton 2 MGM 2 times a day and a cough prep to dry secretions. Using a humidifier can only help. I put mine in a sorta croup tent...turn the vapor toward the crate and cover the whole thing over with a sheet. Make sure the dog is WARM.. I have made that decision and I can tell you that it will be the hardest decision you will make in a dog's care. BUT, it is ithe kindest, most loving , most caring gift an owner can give a loyal loving companion. Prayers are with you.. |

| poor baby! I'm so sorry for you both! That is a bad place to be! I do agree not to try the cotton ball thing. I wouldn't attempt that at all!! There may be other prescriptions that he can be on. Make sure that the vet gives you all your options. Please keep us informed! I will say a little prayer tonight!

| Thanks For All Replies - Had Good Night It is so wonderful to know you are all out there.......such a.....it's hard to describe the feeling.....but thanks so very much! I tried the vaporizor idea and we also have an oxygen concentrator , so pumping oxygen into my makeshift tent. He ( and I) had two three hour sleeps. He doesn't seem to be near so congested. We have our 9 am appointment with the Dr. and see where we go from here. Sometimes I feel so guilty keeping him here, but he was still hungry at 3 this morning. It's amazing how resilient they are! I will let you all know later today. Again thanks......I know the words I was looking for.....it's so reassuring to know that no matter when it is all of you are out there. There's nothing like YORKIE LOVE! |

| Doing so well, didn't even go to vet After I posted this morning, my husband & I decided that we wouldn't even go to the vet.......he seemed so remarkably improved. Even if he needs work on teeth, we can do that later this week. My vet had been gone for several days to a statewide vet convention, so I know her day today was going to be hectic beyond words. But I'm thinking it is a hair caught in the throat issue. When we sucked out a bunch of junk from his mouth, I just took the end off to clean. A little later I noticed coming out of the tubing a 2 inch thing looking like a piece of string.....and I mean string like packaging string.....not a thread. It was several hairs with attached goop. Kind of like when hair gets in your sink and you clean it out there's all kind of gunk on it. Later in the day, I started cleaning out the end into a small clear dish. Sure enough in one cleaning there were about 8 very fine hairs about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long amongst the phlegm which was very yellow. I have determined that those fine hairs come from the bed he's sleeping in......its kind of a fake sheepskin stuff, and he is quite a licker. Different bed for him! A long time ago he had a cough and finally discovered that about 3 very long hairs from the side of his mouth were clear down is throat....again with goop attached. I had even checked again this time. So just info that maybe down the line somebody can use. |

| He's had another great day. I just can't figure it out....Sunday night he had so much phlegm in his nose and mouth he couldn't get his breath. We were cleaning it out about every hour to two hours. He was on antibiotics had gotten better in about 6 days.....kept giving for the 10 day period and by the 10th day he was getting worse and Sunday was about the 13th day......by late Monday he was getting a bit better......by Tuesday morning after being in the vaporizer tent he was practically clear and breathing thru his nose. Today I checked and he had a little in his mouth and I sucked that out. Sure enough, there was one about an inch long piece of hair. I don't know if that little guy has been going thru life with hair in his mouth and it is totally unrelated to the congestion/infection. My vet should be caught up by tomorrow and Gussie is rested up now (he was one tired little dog and I was one tired mama). I still feel like he has some kind of throat obstruction. We'll try and find out. Again, thanks so much for your concern. |

| Lori and Zeus I have a 4 yr old boy - Mighty Zeus - he was runt of the litter and even born outside of the placental sac ( I was there as the father was my male Chewie). He has some leg problems but is "relatively" healthy. Weirdly he is not active at all and is a tad overweight even though I watch his diet (he eats lots of veg). But now he has the mucous problem maybe from vac for Kennel Cough which is required every 6 mos in NYC (needed to go to dog groomers who have to display the law and honor it). He had it 2 wks ago and has had mucous in his throat and runny nose since then. Vet said it was probably not from the shot reaction but probably a cold. Am hoping it's that but any ideas??? thanks. | FYI the intranasal vaccine can cause Chronic Rhinitis. In the future ask for the shot. Is your baby coughing ? the Bordatella vaccine often does cause them to get kennel cough. My Wolfhound ended up with chronic rhinitis & it lasted his whole life & it is miserable, there is no cure for it only treatment. The vaccine can damage the sinus membranes. You do need to keep a close eye on him as IF he's got kennel cough now, it could turn to pneumonia. I hope he recovers soon. |
