| 3 month old pup Rocky scratching himself bleeding!! My 3 month old yorkie pup has been scratching himself nonstop since we got him. We had his nails clipped at first because he was scratching his ears bleeding and then used an antiseptic cream (I cant remember the name of it as we borrowed it from a friend) which seemed to help the wounds on his ears. We just took him to the vet for his inoculation last week in which they examined inside his ears and found he had an ear infection. He gave me some ear drops to use for a week but the scratching hasnt stopped and now he has even started scratching just below his shoulder and I had noticed huge scabs. I left it for a few days to see if it would heal by itself. This evening I noticed that he had scratched the scabs off and he now has an open wound which is red and looks very sensitive and looks like it is bleeding but isnt. I have been researching online what to do about itchy skin and what antiseptic is safe to use on dogs but I have not reached anything I believe would be safe and I'm too scared to use something that might harm as he is still quite young. Is there anything I use that I will have in South Africa that would be safe for him without having to take him to the vet as the ear infection had already caused us a large unexpected fee. I have read that a bath in a saline solution works but I am worried that it might burn his scratches. |

| I was wondering if you could put a soft collar or cone on him so he can't scratch the infected areas or maybe the little booties that they sell for traction might help. Poor Rocky I hope his ear infection goes away and the sores heal up quickly. Maybe some other posters will have good suggestions. Best wishes.

| You have a cause/effect event going on....he is scratching himself to a bloody pulp because of something! You have to diagnose WHAT is causing the itching, resulting in the non stop scratching.....until you get the cause diagnosed and treated, he is going to continue to itch/scratch until he bleeds/gets infected/ and it just goes downhill from there, especially if he develops an overall infection where he has scratched himself to a bloody hot mess. He has an ear infection that was causing him to scratch his ears....he has something going on over his body, that is causing him to itch.....you need to have his condition properly diagnosed so you can treat what is happening! There was a time in my life when I sold stuff and hocked jewelry and phones in order to pay for a vet bill when my dogs needed medical care. Start looking around for stuff you can do without, and either sell it or turn it in at a pawn shop or maybe make arrangements with your vet for monthly payments.....baby needs to be accurately diagnoses so you can provide proper treatment for your baby. |

| Well I have a feeling that his skin is just itchy. Whenever I give him a bath I use a tick and flea shampoo for both my yorkies to prevent them from any bites. Could that possibly be a cause for itchy and irritable skin? I also bathe both of them with a tea tree oil shampoo (I am not sure if you get Marltons Tea Tree Oil in the US), wondering if I should get proper puppy shampoo that will be more gentle on his skin, although I thought tea tree oil would be gentle which is why i kept using it.. |

| I am hoping he will be fine for the rest of the week but I will be having him checked out this weekend as our local SPCA is doing a free check up and fun day for our little pups so Im hoping I can get some answers there. ,, I just wanted to see if there was something I can do in the meantime to help his scratches. | Itchy pup First, welcome to YT. I am sure you will enjoy reading and writing the posts here. So sorry your baby is so itchy and uncomfortable. At least you have the ear issue diagnosed and treated. As for the general body itching, you say you bathed him in flea and tick shampoo. However it is possible that it may not be doing a good job on the fleas etc. Do you have either topical or pill forms of flea and tick preventives where you live? In the US dogs are treated regularly with the preventives and we do not usually depend on the shampoos. As others have said, you really need to have a vet diagnose the cause of the itching before you can treat it. The vet will prescribe meds that may ease the hot spot areas. I do not know that it is safe to use human meds for dogs, especially when the cause of the problem is unknown. It could be that the dog is allergic to the shampoos, the environment or even the food ? Hope your baby gets diagnosed and treated soon as he must feel very miserable. |

| Welcome to YT, are you bathing them with a tick and flea shampoo because they have ticks and, or fleas? if they don't have them the shampoo has chemicals in it for killing these insects and may be too harsh for the dogs skin. It is good that you are taking him in to determine what the cause of itching is from. Sorry but I cannot offer any suggestions what to use until you get to the SPCA.

Yorkie Yakker | My Yorkie scratched her ears and they bled, luckily she did not have an infection of any kind but the Vet said she needed her ears plucked as if there is too much hair in them it will cause an infection. I took Roxie to the groomer and had her ears plucked and her nails clipped |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT . To me, this sounds like a classic pyoderma infection (staph intermedius overgrowth) - and to cure it, you need a prescription from the vet for Simplicef x 30 days.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog Going through the same thing. Use a green tea bag dipped in warm water. Really works when you rub that on hotspots. Next is coconut oil. Use virgin coconut oil. That is helping with itching our dog is getting benadryl for itching. One half tab in am and pm. I put a tiny bit of coconut oil in her food. I thinking this is a yeast infection so looking for a probiotic. Oh and the vet has her on the hills zd diet and on nexguard for flea control. Very frustrating. Hope this helps. I spent 500 dollars at the vet. Should have gone straight to derm dr. |
