| Ring worm questions I'll save you the gory details, but we just returned from the vet with a diagnosis of ring worm for our 5-month old girl Tazi. The vet prescribed fluconazole for treatment. along with an antibiotic. A couple of questions for anyone that may have been through this: Did you notice any side effects from the medication? How often does our bedding need to be cleaned? Daily? (yes, the little one loves to snuggle up at night in our bed). How about carpet - does it need to be steam cleaned or will a regular carpet cleaning machine (which we own) do? How often does the carpet need to be cleaned? How about other surfaces/floors? Clean with bleach? Again, how frequently? I'm asking these questions because some information seems to imply all of this cleaning on a daily basis, which seems like a daunting task. Thanks |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I had a guinea pig with ring worm and I caught it from him before I knew he had it. Afterwards I just washed carefully after handling him. I'm not sure on a dog since they are all over the house. Depending on where it is can you put a little tshirt on Tazi so keep it covered up? I hope other will reply with more experience with ringworm. I hope you get it cleared up quickly and no one else gets it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | The cleaning recommendations can be so overwhelming, not to mention unrealistic. My Marcel caught ringworm from his vet as a pup. He too was on Diflucan x 6 weeks. I did clean as best I could and washed bedding and stuff more frequently, but I certainly didn't/couldn't clean every day, or even close. Still, he wasn't reinfected, and none of us ended up catching it.

| I totally feel your pain. I have been dealing with this for the last couple months and it has been awful. However things seem to be heading in the right direction finally. I have 2 puppies that have gone though almost every type of treatment you can thing. They were taking Griseofulvin but the vet just switched over to fluconazole. This seems to be working. It has been about 2 weeks now without any side effects. They are also getting lime sulfur dips every week. So as for the cleaning, everywhere i read says you should clean daily. Like you said this it quite a hard task. We have them confined to one room with tile as it is very hard to get rid of the spores. I bleach this area twice a week and wash their bedding on HOT water every two days. This has been such a difficult thing to go through but I am hoping these little guys will be better soon. Good luck and please keep us updated on her progress! I would like to talk to people who have or who are going through this so I have a better idea of what to expect because it feels never ending. |

| My little girl unknowingly had ringworm we when adopted her at 10 weeks. She is now almost four years old. I hate thinking back to all that cleaning. You could probably search one of my posts and see how frustrated I was. She shared it with all her family (mommy & daddy & two sister dogs) and the neighbors (neighbor with cancer and her yorkie). I would keep the baby off the rugs/carpet and bed for right now. They are much more difficult to clean. I eventually went to the doctor's office myself because I kept getting it. Oh, I hate thinking back to that. We wish you all the best. |

| My friend's chihuahua got it from her doggy daycare buddies a couple years ago... it was a NIGHTMARE. You have to clean/bleach your sheets and bedding basically daily and YES hire a professional to come clean your rugs and carpets. Lola didn't get reinfected, and never passed it to any of her humans but I think it was due to their meticulous cleaning and re-cleaning of every surface in the house. |

| Did any of you get your air ducts professionally cleaned? Also how did you disinfect your furniture (fabric couches)? The pups were on there before we knew they had it but now no longer have access. |

| I did not do the air ducts, but I did purchase a carpet/furniture shampooer! I cried a lot!!!!! I did get bleach spots on my Lazy Boy sofa from cleaning the tile floors, but it is not that noticeable! I cleaned, and cleaned, and cleaned. The girls were bathed constantly and had to stay all lathered up for about 15 minutes (can't remember...but I did have a timer). I had to give them special meds (because of their size) and make sure they had food on their tummy, so I fed them chicken, cheerios, etc.... Trying to keep them warm and preoccupied while they have shampoo on for 15 minutes wasn't easy! I wish I could find some of those pictures! |

| What I did to treat ring worm My Corgi got it in 2008 from the Groomers. The vet gave us a shampoo. I can't remember the exact name, something like Ketazole to kill the fungus. We shampooed her daily for a week, then went every other day for 2 weeks, then every 3 days for about 2 months. We went through about 3 bottles of shampoo. It was spendy, about $25 a bottle. Neither my other dog a Lab, the cat, nor did the people in the house catch it. None of us got it. I was VERY diligent in the shampoos and did not miss one! I didn't confine my Corgi. She still had run of the house, but I didn't take her out of our yard and didn't expose her to nonfamily dogs during that time. I cleaned the dogs bedding, toys, and our bed and shampooed the carpets once. That's it. |

| I hope you get it cleared up soon. This sounds gross, but back in the day (20 years ago?) I taught special education and I ended up getting a horrible case of ringworm one year. My physician said that it was like I was teaching in a 3rd world country because of all of the diseases going around in my classroom that year. (scabies, head lice, etc.) I was able to get rid of it by using the medicine and washing my clothes, etc. It did take months, though. Good luck with everything.
