| Inflammatory Bowel Disease Does anyone have any experience with their Yorkie and IBD? We are now on Tylosin and Prednisone plus some OTC gastro meds. He is also on B12 shots once a week. Our next step is a complete diet change and after that a possible colonoscopy. I want to try to avoid anything that is invasive until the last choice. Thanks. |

| Yes. Sadly, GI disease is very common in Yorkies. What symptoms are you seeing and have the Tylan an Pred. helped? Usually a food change is tried before starting too many drugs in hopes of avoiding them. How is the bloodwork?

| Inflammatory Bowel Disease Thank you for replying. The symptoms include bowel noises usually beginning @ 4-5 a.m., loose stools, frequently with mucous which may contain blood, loss of appetite during episode, gassy and tummy cramps. He was on Flagyl for awhile but it did not do the trick. He was changed to Tylosin over a week ago and episodes increased so the vet added Prednisone 2 days ago for a trial 6 wk. period. His blood work is good except it shows low B-12 and an overgrowth of bacteria. He takes B-12 shots once a week for a month and then every other week for 6 weeks. In addition to all of this he gets Metamucil sprinkled on his food, a probiotic every other day and 1/4 Pepcid before bed every night. Needless to say, I am putting all of this in a.m. and p.m. pill containers at this point. On top of all of this he is allergic to practically everything outside and has been on 2 weekly allergy shots for 2 years. That is why I am reluctant to change his food because he eats well and enjoys his food. In addition, I have another Yorkie and they both enjoy eating off each other's plates. One small encouraging note, I did hear the bowel noises during the night last night but he was hungry for breakfast and ate everything. Maybe the Prednisone is helping???? Let's keep our fingers crossed. I just hate to think of invasive procedures. My vet tells me that either a colonoscopy or exploratory surgery would give a definite diagnosis and that the exploratory allows gathering of complete samples whereas a colonoscopy is limited. I am resisting this idea. As I said in my post the next step will be a diet change. |

| My Bichon, Hobbes, had IBD and went the Flagyl, antibiotics and Prednisone route. The regular vet referred us to a specialist. Our vet at the animal specialty hospital changed him to Wellness Whitefish and Sweet Potato after doing a colonoscopy for diagnosis and it calmed down. After years of the Wellness he developed kidney stones and had surgery for that. The ER vet felt IBD was an allergic reaction to protein. He had other skin allergies also and a lit bit of Benadrly spray would relieve those when they popped up. He lived for 17 1/2 years and only had an occassional tummy rumble. If hope he is doing better.

| I hope your pup gets to feeling better soon... I've heard of using a fish based diet and probiotics being used successfully on some...

| the prednisone will bring down the inflammation and control the symptoms however once reduced if the diet is not appropriate the symptoms will return. ibd dogs react well to a dietary change. usually grain free food is the best; wet is better than dry as it is less irritating. changing to a homecooked or raw food is best. in the begining a homecooked diet will be best to give the GI tract time to heal and rest. i fed mine ground turkey and oatmeal for 5 months. probiotics are crucial to help fight bad bacteria. good luck.
