| Extremely SICK 12 week puppy (weighs 1.2 pounds) Hello Everyone, My name is Susan and I'm new to this site. I wanted to introduce myself to everyone and hope someone might be able to help us get through this difficult time. My boyfriend and I bought a puppy from a private breeder last weekend. When we got her she was lively but was tugging on her ears and had loose stool. At approximately 3 in the morning we woke up with her pooping and vomiting in her crate. By 7 am she couldn't walk and wasn't responding. I rushed over to the hospital and noticed she peed on herself. She was laying on the table lifeless, it was horrible. We were told Sophie was positive for ear mites. Fecal test also came back positive for giardia and she was also positive for hypoglycemia and has anemia too. She remained in the hospital all day, and by the time I picked her up in the afternoon she looked better. Once I started giving her the deworming medication she became weak. She slept all day and barely drank any water. Each time she tried to move she would wobble and collapse. At one point she became unresponsive to the point she seemed she went blind. You would call her name and no reaction. She refused to eat or take her nutrical. I couldn't bare to see her suffer and rushed her to an emergency clinic. She stayed over night again and the doctor confirmed once again she was hypoglycemic, anemic and had Giardia. They watched her all night and noticed her sugar dropped during the night and added more sugar to her IV. By the time we picked her up she looked so much better. She was active on the ride to her vet. We decided to leave her at the vet to keep a close watch on her during the day. I felt relieved that she was looking better and was in good care, but I know we still have a long road ahead of us. I picked her back up at 5:30 and she seemed gloomy. By the time we got home she was wobbling once again, unable to walk and sleeping a lot. We're feeding her every 4 hours with food and some nutrical, but it just doesn't seem to be enough. Does anyone have any suggestion or any advice that might be able to help us? Please let us know, we really appreciate it. ~Susan |

| Feed her some ham. Alot of people will disagree with this.........but feed her some thin sliced ham. Baby pieces. When she is wobbly, place your finger in sugar and put it in her mouth. Make it wet with water. |

| Hello and welcome to YT. I am so sorry that you are going through this with your new baby. I am not sure what advice to give you, but there are some wonderful, experienced people on here and I am sure they can give you advice. Have you contacted her breeder? Good luck, and please keep us updated on your baby girl.

| I'm So Sorry I am so sorry you are going through this. When your baby is sick I know it can be a hurtful and stressful time. I don't know how old your baby is but I suggest feeding a bland diet every 2 hours and giving her kayro syrup for keep her blood sugar levels up. Also have her evaluated as soon as possible for liver shunt. That also maybe why she is lithargic. My thought's and prayers are with you, Hugs. |

| Welcome to the group So sorry to hear about your new pup...you did the right thing by taking her to the vet... I would contact the breeder and inform him/her of this...maybe they can cover some of the vet cost?? They did sell you a sick pup... Sounds like all the issues are curable? Who's the breeder?

| Do not feed your baby ham. A family member fed my oldest yorkie ham years ago when she was 4 months old and she spent 3 day in the hospital. I would stick to the blended chicken and rice. |

YT 3000 Club Member | I would not feed ham it is too fatty, they can get pancreatitis from this, pigs eat all kinds of garbage, feed often and a bland diet, I would check into the people you got your pup from is the other dogs in the litter could be sick as well, and they need to help with the vet bills. I wish you luck on your baby girl |

MOST people will disagree...not a lot of people!!!! Ham is a leading cause of pancreatis in dogs.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I hope your little one gets better soon. My Cali was very sick as a puppy. She had multiple hypoglycemic episodes and was in and out of the vet and ER. She does have mild liver disease but outgrew the hypoglycemia.

to the OP, i'm sorry your little one is not doing well. hopefully you can get the hypoglycemia under control. maybe its just worse now because of her ear mites, giardia, and meds making her tummy upset and not wanting to eat.

| Welcome to YT! I am so sorry that your little one is so sick. I'm glad that you have taken her to the vet and she is being treated. My suggestion would be to follow your vets advice and keep a close eye on her. Someone else also suggested that you contact her breeder to help with the bills and I think that is also a great suggestion that you should follow up on. There are laws that protect the buyer an many states and I believe FL is one. I'm wondering if you actually saw the parents of your puppy. Many times it is not a breeder but a broker selling puppies. Could you give us a name or website of where you purchased your little one from. Please do not feed her ham.

| You need to make sure you have something in her system at least every 2 hours. 4 hours is too long. She needs the nutrical to get her blood sugar up but then it will plummet back down again, so she needs a protein with it. This is VERY IMPORTANT. Once you get a pea sized glob of nutrical in her, give her a teaspoon of meat baby food. Beech Nut makes a beef, chicken, or turkey one that is great and is 100% meat. If you can't get that, you can do Gerbers but theirs has cornstarch in it. (It's OK, but 100% meat is better.) This baby will need 24/7 supervision until she's at least 2 pounds. Once hypoglycemia starts, it's a very difficult cycle to beat. You want to keep the blood sugar STABLE, not have the ups and downs. That is what is causing the symptoms you are seeing with the glazed look, lethargy, etc. Once they get to that point, it's very hard to get the sugars up so PREVENTION IS KEY. Make sure she has something in her system every 2 hours and yes, that is round the clock. It doesn't have to be a LOT, she is tiny, but it has to be something until her body can start self regulating. As for the parasites, follow your vets advice and recommendations but if she is having diarrhea, she will probably need to be hospitalized and on IV fluids. These little ones can do downhill VERY QUICKLY. It will take a lot of diligence on your part to get her through this and hopefully you are up for the challenge. Keep us posted. |
