Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Missing hair and scratching Today was giving Sophie a bath thinking she was dirty, she had been scratching, and when I got her wet, I noticed a bold patch on her right side, where her kidney will be , I guess. It was irritated and flaky, poor thing, that's why she was scratching. I could not find a flea on her, but I still used the Dawn on her, called the vet and took her right over, last Thursday or Friday, was her last bath, and I didn't notice anything. The vet took a sample to check for fungus, in the mind time prescribed Itraaconazole -10mg. once a day, and Amitriptyline 10 mg 1 every 12 hrs to help with itching .When I got home and checked what Amitrptyline is, I don't think I want to give it to her . he did not prescribed anything to put on. I've never had any problems with this vet..I've never had any health problem with my babies, but after reading so many horror stories, makes me start to wonder. Has any one had this happen? Any advise..?

| Wow! No, I've never experienced that problem. I'm not familiar with that drug, but I'm like you and very hesitant myself to take anything much less giving drugs to my lil one. Maybe someone else will come along and be able to help you later.

| You could replace your Heartworm preventative with Revolution for two months or more... Yorkies are susceptible to mites and an easy way to rule them out is by using Revolution, as they rarely will show up on a skin scraping. If it is mites, she will experience relief in 24-48 hours...

| This may be more appropriate.... The Side Effects of Amitriptyline (Elavil) in Dogs and IMHO, I would wait till my dog was hairless... Any skin product with coconut extract would be healing and soothing, it's a natural Antibiotic and antifungal ... worked better on my skinkid than numerous scripts over the years... healed up in about 1 month!

Coconut , good idea, I just bought some from a YT member and been giving it to them on their food. Should I use it topically?

They are on Interceptor , does it work for mites? I would buy the Revolution, is it OK to switch? I think im itchy now...just as a precaution, how should I treat the house, bedding, Max, her???. I already checked Max, but couldn't see anything, as far as hair , or irritation .

Yes, it can be contageous... know as Scabies in humans... My vet and doctor said newest info is no treatment required to the house or clothing, they like to stay on skin. When I got it from my dog... I didn't do anything, except get a creme from my Doc, and use the Revolution on all my pets, cats included. I did launder my clothes, or placed them in plastic bags until time to wash... just to ease my mind. Mine were traveling red bumps, under the skin at my waist, itched worse at 4-5 PM every day, and sometimes intermittantly at other times.. Coconut is also bug repellant....
