| Tatum's sick and I have a food question I posted this over in the Health and Diet section for the food question but I thought more might see it in this section and since I hope to find an answer quickly (because she's sick right now), I thought I'd post it both places.... Science Diet I/D vs. Innova......... Okay, I never thought I would be comparing these two foods but Tatum has some issues right now that look like she'll require a blander diet for a while. She'll be 5 years old in February and has been on Innova most of her life. We have never had problems with it. But she has had some kind of bacterial tummy bug that she just has been having a hard time getting over. The vet thinks they are separate incidents but does say that she needs to have a blander diet for a little longer than I gave it last time to really let her system heal. I don't agree with his choice of Science Diet but do agree that sometimes the prescription ones are needed for one thing or another. When Tatum is eating the canned I/D (for digestive issues), she has no problem. I think though that we went back to the Innova maybe a little too quickly the last time she had this diarrhea/vomiting issue. So my question is..... this time he wants her on the I/D for a couple weeks (and according to the ingredients listing I've found, the canned has better ingredients than the dry) - after she's all better, is there another food that's as good as Innova but is on the blander side like the I/D? Anyone have a sensitive stomach dog that needs a food like that?? Oh, and no.... the vet does not think it's pancreatis (sp?) or anything else serious but is reserving judgement and more expensive tests for after we give this round of medicine a try.

| This is what happened to my girls on Innova. The vet wanted me to change the dog food. I did and no more problems. I now feed them Wellness. I hope this helps some.

On a good note, she is SO much better this morning. No diarrhea and she is much happier. She's taking Albon, a probiotic and anti nausea medicine. The vet said it was a major baterial overgrowth and nothing more serious (hopefully) - probably picked up after poking her snout in that dead rat out in the yard. Like I said before, he was reserving the more expensive tests for if she didn't get better on these meds. She'll be getting a MUCH needed bath tonight!

| Ranger had several periods of gastroenteritis while on Innova. This was throughout a period of 6 months. Once I stopped feeding Innova, he has not had one gastrointestinal issue. Although she's been on Innova for the last several years, a formula or ingredient change could have triggered it, or she may have developed an allergy which could be presenting these gastro symptoms. We had to use the *I think* Royal Canin or whatever brand makes the "Low Residue" formula throughout his bouts, which I hated doing, but understood the neccessity of. Poor little Tatum! I hope she gets better!!

| Amanda, I've been sitting here thinking about what you said and I think you really might have something. I am almost positive that it was about the time I bought Tatum's latest bag of Innova that she had her first "episode". I always buy the big bag and fill up her food storage container and seal the rest and put it in the freezer. I just never thought that it might be the Innova because she's been eating it for so long but it is a little unsettling that this started about the time she started a new bag. Okay, I just went and looked at my checkbook and I bought this new bag in mid-September, about two weeks before she got sick the first time, and I remember not opening it until a week or so later when her other bag was empty. The vet reminded me yesterday that her first visit for this problem was Oct. 2nd. This same store sells Wellness also and I think they have an opened bag return policy so I'm going to see if they'll switch it out for me. Thanks for making me think about all of that! It feels so much better to have a possible reason for all of this since she's never been sick before and now it just seems non-stop. You've made my day!

| Waited too long to add but I also wanted to say that after her first bout of tummy issues, we fed her Science Diet I/D for a week or so (along with the meds) and after she got better, went back to Innova. A couple days later she was sick again. Gave her the I/D again for a week or so (along with meds again) and she got better. Back on the Innova, sick again. There's a pattern right there if there ever was one. I just was racking my brain trying to think of any "changes" in her lifestyle and never considered that the Innova could possibly be responsible since it technically wasn't a change.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You could try Wellness Simple Solutions or even Wellness CORE, or Natural Balance. If you want to stay more mid-level protein, I'd do the CORE.

| Thanks! I'll look at those. I guess all along I've been wanting something comparable to the I/D (bland diet) like maybe the Rice & Duck but it looks like I just need a different good quality food now that I've thought about the Innova issue.

| Hey Angie. I really think it might be the food. You were aware of their formula change not to long ago, weren't you? I think they added some pumkin and something else, I cannot quite remember as I wasn't too focused on it since I had changed foods in June. Ranger started his bouts of gastroenteritis in January, shortly after we stared him on Innova. I didn't think twice about the food because I thought the ingredients were so fabulous. However, after another bout and almost death experience in February, then a few other mild bouts throughout the spring and finally the LAST one in June, the lightbulb clicked and I changed him to Wellness Superfive. I guess I was a bit dense and had just succombed to the idea that he was super sensitive and would always have tummy issues. He did GREAT on that, but started disliking it. I put him on Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish and then finally switched to NV raw. I LOVE the Natural Balance, any formula really, and will continue to use it for snacks and travel, but I really like the raw. My babies LOVE it, haven't had ANY gastro problems, and most of all are soooo excited to eat which makes me feel good Ranger hasn't had a problem since I took him off Innova in June. I think the Science Diet is fine for a short time, but honestly, I don't think she should need it for more than a few days, as her intenstine and tummy should heal quickly. I think re-introducing something that causes such a reaction would be very detrimental, and would switch her after a week of I/D, mixing a bit together, you know the drill. Look into Natural Balance, it's a great product. I have heard others had problems with the babies getting tired of eating Wellness. Good luck!! Give kisses to sweet Tatum for me!!

| Jazzy had a couple of rounds of tummy problems and had to be put on the Science diet ID.....switched her to the Merrick's BG grain free and she also eats NV raw. She has been fine ever since. It has been so long I am not sure )because i had tried 2 dif ones) but I believe it was the innova she was on while getting the gastro upsets. |
