| third eye lid problem My 9 month old puppy has the start of a third eye protrusion. I took him to the vet yesterday and he did a stain and there is not a scratch on the eye itself. He told me this is caused by genetics. There are two types of surgery. One stitches down the third eye lid and the other removes the third eye lid. Has anyone had this problem before? |

| I had one yorkie puppy with this problem about 12 years ago. Its called a cherry eye. Its not always genetic and can be caused by dirt or some kind of infection or injury. It is very common in bull dogs, pugs, basset hounds and other big eyed breeds. It is very easy to fix and my vet only charged about 60.00. They are somethimes harder to fix in the bigger breed with this problem. |

| Yes, my sister-in-law's dog had this, and they fixed it surgically. Her dog looks perfect now. I will try to find some details for you...

| My vet wants $320 to do the procedure; to put a few stitches to hold it down. We have a new puppy who grabs Pippins fur when they are playing and won't let go. He has grabbed his face hair and I wondered if that's what caused it by him hanging on and not letting go. I had scheduled Pippin for surgery tomorrow but I worry what if the puppy did cause it and if the puppy does it again and breaks the stitches. Tonight I am taking both dogs to a trainer to get some help to prevent the puppies behavior. I'm also going to talk to the vet to see if we should hold off on the surgery until I get the puppy trained to not grab. The puppy is very sweet but when he plays he likes to grab hair and hold on (chest, leg or face hair). I called the trainer and she suggested to spray bitter apple on Pippin but that didn't work. I am thinking of taking Pippin and getting his face shaved very short. I know I need to stop Marley from doing this but until I do I don't want Pippin to get hurt. Does anyone have any other suggestions. |

| Couldn't you keep your puppy away from your other dog while he recovers? You're going to have to be very careful with his eye while the stitches are in and all.

| I will have to keep them apart when we do the surgery. Last night in the house I put Marley in a harness, on the leash, and wouldn't let him play with Pippin. I can't see that working long term. I need to break his biting habit. I take them outside often because we're potty training. It starts off running and chasing each other around the yard. Then the puppy starts to play hard and grabs Pippin's fur. Pippin tries to shake him lose. I growl, separate them, and tell Marley "No bite". It can happen so fast. Pippin is 9 months and 8 pounds, and Marley is 3 months and 3 pounds. It's unacceptable behavior to me and I hope I can stop it. When we got Pippin we had an older lab that was in poor health and Pippin never learned to play with another dog. He doesn't know how to stand up to the little guy. |

| This is a very good link that shows the procedure. Not for weak stomachs. Cherry Eye Surgery... Third Eyelid Eversion In A Dog in ThePetCenter.com.

| Thank you Charlene. That really was informative. His isn't that large yet but it still looks uncomfortable, and it does itch. I decided to go ahead with the surgery tomorrow. Pip is the love of my life and I hate to have him put under for the surgery, but there's no alternative. Keep us in your prayers. |
