Missing Yoshi Everyday! Donating Member | Concern I have a friend that has a slight problem. She suspect her yorkshire and maltese took part in the killing and had maybe even ate a piece of another small dog. And she doesn't know what she needs to do. She isn't sure if she needs to go put them down or what. She is torn up and confuse. And i don't have any idea on what to tell her. I can't imagine a yorkie or a maltese killing another dog to even think about them eating it. Has anyone heard of such a thing or has an experience with this? Any advice I could give her would be appreciated. I myself am tore up from hearing this. Dogs killing and eating dogs just doesn't sit well with me. The 2 dogs seems so friendly. I don't know what may have cause it or if it is even imaginable. Please help!

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Not sure of the whole situation there but she should keep a good eye on the dogs. Dog are decendents of wild animals and the pack instinct is still in them. So things can happen.

| Put them down? Why? There is one thing that HAS to be checked into though for everyone's safety. Was the dog that was killed current on the rabies vaccine? If not this person might have to quarantine the two dogs... I would have her call a vet office that she trusts in her area and ask them what she needs to do. They should be able to answer questions like this. Make sure she trusts them though....

| You really have not provided enough details to know what was going on. If the dogs were running with a pack they could have and probably would have participated in whatever activities the pack was doing. I don't know much about the Maltese breed, but Yorkies are fierce little hunters. They do not have the save moral values that humans do and would see no wrong in killing another of their own kind. If this was an accident and the two slipped out of the house/yard and met up with a pack, that is one thing. If this was a group of dogs that the Maltese and Yorkie generally run with, then my questions would be geared towards the owner. |

| I am sure she is struggling but you might tell her there have been instances on here where mother dogs have killed and eaten their own puppies. So other morbid things have happened with dogs. You really cant determine exactly why it happpens

| These laws all depend on the state. The health dept. is probably checking the dead dog for rabies right now (they need brain tissue to do so). If the dog did not have rabies then there is a higher chance her dogs will be released. If the dog did have rabies then hopefully your friends dogs were vaccinated and after watching for symptoms and these two dogs not getting any, they could be released.

So it could be a problem of them being bitchy and pmsing...shoot they are little women, could be an alpha situation that turned nasty and the pack mentality got going and they both hurt the other dog. If the dog that was hurt was rabies negative then her babies should be fine.

| Over the years I have heard several instances of Yorkies killing other Yorkies. One breeder told me a story that she had a beautiful little male and she let a friend of hers borrow him to breed to her female. Unfortunately the male and female were left alone and the female killed the little male. My advise is that if your have a dog that is aggressive toward other dogs then it should be kept away from other dogs, it does not matter the size. It just hurts to think that such sweet little dogs would do such a thing but it is just a fact of life. Sometimes it happens. People just need to know that is can happen and use caution when introducing new dogs or when keeping dogs in a pack environment. |
