| Labor, How long? I wanted to post this in hopes of putting out 'the word' on how long a bitch in whelp should go before calling the vet. That IMO is so important. I'd like to share my protocol which may be different from others. I am sharing mine because I have not lost a bitch in whelp or a puppy to date. I do NOT let me girls have hard labor for more than 45 min. If nothing is happening at the 45 min mark, I call my vet, make arrangements to meet at the clinic (can take them about a half hour) they meet me there. And assist or section whatever is neccessary. By the time pups are here mom's been in labor for about 2 hrs max. Which is plenty for a Toy breed. I'd be interested in others protocol. |

| My protocol if the water sac has broken and there is no hard labor my vet assures me the pups are fine for up to 10 hours ( I have yet to experience such a delay but thought it worth mentioning). Once hard labor is evident, if no pup presents itself within the first half hour to hour its off to the vet, (again I've not experienced this either but is what I expect). Knock on wood!! Ive had all free whelpers, never had a c-section nor the need for oxitocin (until the next day for clean out). This thread is vital for all new breeders, how to determine the difference in hard labor or destress and how long you should wait before contacting your vet. It has been my experience, if your little gal is in hard labor often times she will throw her head back on each contaction, and or extend her body or legs almost rigid like. If a puppy doesnt show itself within a half hour an inexperienced person should contact the vet asap. The moms will often do hard labor, present a pup, clean the pup, contractions tend to stop or slow down, she will rest in between. If you see no resting usually means another pup is on the way. If your little gal is grunting and pushing for a long period of time (more than a half hour) without presenting a pup it will usually exhaust her making her too weak to whelp or may mean a pup is blocking the canal or is too large to pass. This is when you don't delay in getting her to your vet. examples; my Hattie (last litter) had 5 within and hour and a half once her water broke, rested very little in between, where as, Trina once her water broke she didnt start hard labor for another 5 hours and presented her first pup, then another 3 hours to whelp another 2 pups, but contractions stopped in between allowing her to rest. Resting is vital!!

Donating YT 14K Club Member | So, how many c-sections do one of your bitches have before before you spay her? Do you have any that free whelp? Or do you simply schedule c-sections?

| Hey Everyone...we Had Puppies This Morning...yeah!!! [B]HI EVERONE..."WE HAD PUPPIES"!!! I am the lady who said the sonogram showed two pups and the xray showed only one and ask for your help on the matter. I felt either Lil'Bit was going to have two real large ones or "really" I felt she had three pups in there....WELL...I was right she had THREE pups. Just like last time she did great and the pups are beautiful! The first time she had her four in ten minutes..."I know you guys said that wasn't possible ...BUT...it was true". This time she cried a little but had her three pups in an hour...She did great. Right now she is resting of course but still strong. Oh by the way the pups were 2 girls and 1 boy. The daddy is Pismo (ours) and of course he is very very curious...he knows something is up...But our Lil'Bit never lets him to the puppies till they are atleast 6 weeks old...eyes open and walking around. GOD I AM GLAD THIS IS OVER! I get so anxious and contract with each of her contractions...Phew...It was hard on me too! **By the way to answer the question after going on....We never let our girl go over 45 minutes without calling the vet and even sooner if it looks like she is having trouble...Don't hestitate to call your vet if you wonder...Why wait and take a chance something is going wrong?? We all love our little furbabies don't we?? Closing...got a little mess to clean up..I am happy... Sandie Last edited by sandie; 01-03-2006 at 09:39 AM. Reason: adding somethings |

| One of my girls had to have a c-section. I gladly had her spayed at the same time. She tried to deliver her 2nd puppy but it was stuck and she ended up having a ruptured uterus. She is happy and healthy now. I had another girl that was in labor about 1-1/2 year ago. She had had puppies before with no problem. She was in labor for about 45 minutes and I panicked so off to the vet's I go- 45 minutes away. I brought towels , scissors, clamps and even a heated corn bag in case she started to deliver. Well, 5 miles out of town I had to pull over. Yep, she started delivering! I cleaned her up a bit and back home I went and she ended up having 5 puppies total with no problem. |

| I also forgot to mention that if you have a vet you can trust 110% that makes being breeder more enjoyable! When I first started going to my vet I told him I know my dogs, do not ever tell me that I do NOT know what is going on with them! I feel that he has been a wonderful friend to my husband and I, he also gives my dogs excellent care! I also always make sure that my vet is paid first before anything else! Except for dog food and treats! Melanie |

| Melanie~ I know I have read too that spaying immediately after a c-section is not advisable because it will hinder the Dam's ability to care for the puppies. Those hormones provided by the reproductive organs are essential. Is this what you understand the rationale to be? Also, I know that if a girl has to have a c-section, special protocols must be undertaken to make sure she "thinks" she free whelped to kick in the natural instincts necessary to care for her babies. They save the placenta and even rub some of the fluids, etc on her nd place the placenta down by her so when she wakes up from the anesthesia it is there. Is this true? |
