| YT study about Spay/Neuter I know we have a split views on to surgically alter or not. I would like to get stats from members her on YT. I am personally curious to see how many have had problems with s/n of at any age. I persoanlly I have NEVER known a spay/neuter that resulted in something 'bad'. I've worked at the human society, my mom was breeder before I got into Yorkies, and I'v ehad my share of pets that I've spayed and neutered..cats and dogs... My famous disclaimer...I want us to be civil and nice...Admin if we can't play nice in the sandbox kick us out by closing this post! I want to learn something please |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Well, I had a minature dachund that I had spayed at 6 months. Not a lick of problems for her. But, yes, I am curious to out of those members that have had this procedure done on their furbabies, how many had problems.

| Irene, please specify. I am assuming you mean first hand experience with these problems, right? Not my cousins friends boyfriend overheard and not I read on the net this was a possibility and not my vet said this...but actual first hand experience, right? Please clarify or you know where this will end up. That being said, as far as MY OWN DOGS, we had a 3 mo old daucsaund (sp?) spayed, a 2 year old peke neutered, , a younger (don't remember age) female Cocker Spaniel spayed, and a 6 yr old mutt neutered without ever having any problems health related or behavior wise. The ducshand and peke died young from a hernia related problem. The Cocker lived to be 14 yrs old, the mutt is still alive today at 8 yrs old. |

Gotcha. Good point. Yes, first hand experience, not what we saw on the net or heard. This is digging a bit deeper.

| Great idea Irene! I love to see what other Yters experineces have been in a poll form. I haven't answered the poll questions yet because I do not want to unintentionally skew the results. I thought I would ask some questions and then answer after Irene has responded. Have you had a problem come up as a result of spaying or neutering your dog? I assume you mean by "problem" something other than the typical pain and discomfort from a major surgery such as this or them pulling the stiches out, etc. I am guessing you mean like incontinence or weight gain or laziness, less athletic, sleeping more, not maternal or less maternal in females, some kind of cancer more prevalent in neutered than intact dogs? Is this what you mean? Part of the problem is that people would not necessarily relate these "problems", especially those occurring later in life, with the fact that the dog was neutered. It is similar to "vaccinosis". It is hard to prove the connection between specific maladies and the fact that the dog was over vaccinated. My miniature poodle who was spayed at a young age became incontinent as a result. My german shepherd who was spayed at under 5 years lived to 12 but she died of bladder cancer which is more prevalent in neutered dogs. Should I answer "Yes, more than once" in this case? Hefner is neutered and sleeps a lot more than my girls, Chai and Ava (neither is neutered) both run faster than he does and are more athletic. Is this because he was neutered young or would this have been his general personality regardless? I don't really know. He is the only one who is big enough to consider agility with but he is not as athletic. He loves to do it but he is not as fast. |

I Love Thor Donating Member | Thor's neuter went very well as expected. Our female lab Izzy was spayed before her first heat and it was the healing process that was the problem. Basically her incision wouldn't heal and kept splitting open and it got infected. Today she is fine, she jsut has a thicker scar. |

| Kim, I'm looking for any problems really. Stiches being pulled out or incisions being infected are still not fun. I just want to see who had problems and who didn't. We don't know for fact if cancer is caused by this or that...it all depends on the dog and the history I'm sure. sorry you lost yoru shepard. But honestly that is a long life span for a large breed. This is just food for thought and generaliztion. No reply is right or wrong. We all have stories and experiecns to share..let's share'em! Right? Oh and if you had multiple pets that had a problem you can vote for each one..I'm looking for stats.. |

If that is the "test" Irene is applying then the results are already skewed. I know this isn't scientific and I think she is just trying to get people's "perceptions" more than anything so I guess if my perception is that I had two dogs who "probably or more than likely had "problems" from their neutering" in my opinion as their owner then that is how I should answer. Everyone here can see from my response whether they want to place any weight to my answer or ignore it, and I will do the same based on others responses.

Anyway, I wasn't looking for an argument so I will accept your answer of "I guess so..." and move on. (That's all I was really looking for anyway. ) Thanks!
