| Any one ever heard of PCOS in women? Just wondering if any of you have heard of PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome). Here is a link that describes what it is:http://www.4women.gov/faq/pcos.htm I have been trying to get pregnant for quite a while now and discovered after stopping my BC pills last year that I do not have periods. I had this when i was younger and started the BC pills to regulate myself as a solution. After talking to my OBGYN she has told me I may need to go on Clomid to help me conceive. Well after having a regular visit with my General Practitioner for a yearly check up I just mentioned it to her in passing since she knew my husband and I were trying to conceive. After talking to her a little she mentioned I could have PCOS. She told me to talk to my OBGYN about it since I am already working with her but I am kind of disturbed that my OBGYN wants to just put me on Clomid instead of telling me this is a possible diagnosis. Any way...after reading all the things about PCOS...it sounds like I could have this besides the weight gain and the excessive hair growth. Has anyone ever been diagnosed with this or does any one have any success stories of pregnancies? I am just really frustrated because I want to just start having my period so I can have a chance of conceiving. Thanks!

| hey yes i have this and i dont know what all they have told you ...so dont get mad at the messenger i was told at 22 to get pregnant or i would have a extreemly hard time ... it also slows down the cancer ..yes it can cause cancer when the cysts rupture ...IT is painful ...if you dont have the other issues with PSO good for you ...but watch for them if your not trying to get pregnant stay on the pill it helps stop the cysts from damaging your ovaries make you HMO run test do sonograms i was too young to know what i was giving up by just letting the dr's tell me how to deal with this ... now i cant have kids I dont want to scare you but this has been a huge issue for me

| I have this as well. They discovered I had this when I was 12 years old and have been on BC pills since. I am now 26 years. But you must know there are varying degrees of POCS. Some people have it and never have a lot of cysts on their ovaries and some people have a lot of cysts that are very painful and have to have their ovaries removed, etc. Also the weight gain, excessive hair growth on face and stomach, as well as hormonal levels that are out of whack usually are indicators of POCS along with cysts on the ovaries. I luckily have only have had a few cysts over the years and never needed surgery and they just popped on their own...very painful. The BC pills and water pills balanced out my hormones correcting the weight as well as the hair growth. After that was all corrected, I was told by the doctors that POCS wouldn't really be an issue until I decided to get pregnant....which I haven't yet so I can't help you there. But they have told me two things...since I have been BC for so long that it would help me get pregnant faster. However, if not and I can't produce an egg on my own, then I would need help from an infertility specialist since POCS can also mean you are infertile. But like I said, I'm not there yet so I can't help you there. Also they recently found a link between POCS and type II diabetes so you should make sure you get checked regularly for Type II, which can easily be avoided by eating healthily. Also if you are diagnosed with POCS make sure you get check regularly for cancer as there is a link there as well. My doctor has me see her twice a year for check-ups and I get full blood work up once a year. Hope this helps.

| It sounds like they don't really know what you have. I had painful periods, and pelvic pain in between periods. As I got older, the BC stopped helping and the pain got progressively worse until I was practically unable to function 2 weeks a month (the week I had my period, and then 2 weeks later). My doctor just *decided* that I had endometriosis and wanted to shoot me up with lupron. I went to a surgeon and had them do surgery (the only way to diagnose it) and I had other issues, but NOT endo. So I would have taken some nasty medication with long term irreversible side effects for a disease I didn't even have! Do you want to know how quickly I changed doctors?? Anyway, please do a ton of reseach and get second and third opinions before you just take Clomid. If you don't know what's wrong, Clomid could make the problem worse. Go and see a RE, a reproductive endocrinologist or at least a fertility specialist. My surgeon was a fertility specialist. They say the average woman gets pregant in 6 months - 1 year once they start trying. If you are older than 30 or if you have problems, then you shouldn't wait more than 6 months before you see a specialist.

| The problem you are describing does not immediately indicate that PCOS is the cause in my opinion. Most likely, the problem you are experiencing is called Post Oral Contraception Amenorrhea, a type of secondary amenorrhea. This is when you fail to have a period after stopping birth control. You may want to speak with your doctor about taking progesterone in order to check your ovaries. You would take progesterone for seven days. If you still fail to menstruate after that time, it's an indication of inadequate estrogen levels or disruption in the ovarian cycle. You doctor is putting you on Clomid to induce menstruation and ovulation. It is the treatment of choice in women with amenorrhea who want to get pregnant. Should you have PCOS, then Clomid would still be the treatment given. Hope that helps.

You know I kind of thought I did not have ALL the symptoms of PCOS either but I thought I woudl ask. After going to the Doctors yesterday she has decided to try me on clomid since she thinks that will be the fastest way to get me pregnant and reduce my stress about it. She knows how long I have been trying and said she wants me to be able to get pregannt and relax so I am going to start on that soon. At frist I really wanted to try another approach first but after talking to her and praying baout it a lot I think this is the best option for me now. Also she is running a few more blood tests just to make sure everything checks out okay before I start it. We also did an ultrasound and all that showed was the cysts that I normally have. Thanks for your help and advice! Wish me luck!

She had all kinds of tests done, etc. I don't remember if she took anything. She did get pregnant, gave birth to Brandon Jacob, and nursed him. She thought nursing would prevent pregnancy again....six weeks after Brandon was born, little Kassidy was conceived. She had 2 children within a year - commonly known as "Irish twins." So, you never now when your body is ready. If you take the meds, will the effects last after you stop? If not, it's not so terrible.

PCOS can be/is very painful at times. Your dr will prescribe meds to help with that. I have to take a VERY low does birth control because the high hormone levels in some of the stronger ones can affect it also.

| I was diagnosed with pcos about 7 years ago. I was put on BC pills and it helped but I started getting migraines. After changing the pill so many times I came off of them. It took me 6 years to get pregnant with my second son. I went to my GYN and my blood pressure was off the charts to stroke level, I'm only 32! So I was put on pills for it, well Back in march I blew up! Gained 35lbs in a month and a half!!!!!!! Checked online about it and did not realize that insuline resistance will cause the pcos along with high blood pressure and numerouse other things. I was put on glucofage to prevent diabetes and to regulate my insuline along with a water pill for the bloating. I feel wonderful!!!!!! My periods are every month for the first time in a long time without the pill.

| I also have PCOS and my dr. put me on glucophage. I feel great and I've been having regular periods. I was just diagnosed about 6 months ago and started the glucophage 4 months ago. I have NO PCOS symptoms; not overweight at all, no excess hair, no acne, etc. I was diagnosed because i stopped having periods....after blood tests and ultrasound 3 doctors confirmed PCOS. I will be trying to conceive soon and my dr. doesn't think it will be a problem. Good luck! Don't stress about it too much

Senior Yorkie Talker | I have PCOS but I don't have polycystic ovaries. However , I am insulin resistant which is the #1 cause in women with PCOS. Just because I don't have polycystic ovaries , I do ovulate normally and I have normal cycles but the being IR causes me to have alot of excess hair , skin tags , etc which definately causes my self-esteem to drop to the bottom of the bucket. There's a medication called "Metormin" which is used to treat diabetics but it's also used to treat women with PCOS. In most cases , it brings back your cycles and helps you lose weight. If you'd rather go a more natural approach , try Vitex (Chasteberry Tree). It restores the hormone balance and causes the menstrual cycle to return and ovulation to occur as it should. I've been taking it for awhile just to make sure my body stays on track and it's absolutely wonderful. I know ALOT about PCOS. If you have any questions , please feel free to send me a PM. I could give you a ton of information.
