| organ donor I know this is a heavy subject but....I was at the license agency recently & of course there was a long line.I couldn't help but notice that when the clerk asked people if they would like to be a donor they would quickly reply no. There were signs posted around stating 90,000 people are waiting for an organ & 19 die daily.. When I got home I checked some things out on the computer, I didn't know that in Austria,Norway,Spain,Belgium,Denmark,Finland,Franc e,Italy & Sweden all have an "opt-out" policy, which means yor ARE considered a donor unless your in a Gov.register stating you don't want to donate. Where in the U.S. we have an "opt-in" policy, where your considered NOT to be a donor unless you say you want to be one. This doesn't even address the issue of donating bone marrow, where your not even dead to do that... It got me to thinking how little most of us even give this any real thought. It doesn't seem to be an issue for us unless it hits close to home....Would you? Could you? What if it was your child? Would it matter? Why don't we? Any thoughts? |

My furkids Donating Member | I am an organ donor and so is my husband. Even if you do not check "yes" to be an organ donor they will still ask the family. All that means(on your license) where is states you are an organ donor is just that....that you want to donate your organs. They still have to ask a family member if they are will to donate your organs. I know this as my former sister-in-law was brain dead and had checked off "yes" and they STILL had to get her husbands permission to remove and donate her organs. My former brother-in-law received a letter stating that if at any time any family member needed an organ that, because his wife donated all of her organs, tissues and all else, that they would be put on top of the list. He needs a heart....they told him he has to be put on the list like everyone else. My sister-in-law died about 18 years ago.

| I think that great that you & your husband have had that discussion. I have never spoke of this w/ mine... that's kind of sad. I'm also glad that your both donating... I only thought about this because I was a little surprised that all the people that were asked all said no |

| Yes, I am an organ donor. Always will be. One person can help many, many people by being an organ donor. However, like BLowry says, even if you say "Organ Donor" on your driver's license or however your state does it, your family can still say no and not allow anything of yours to be donated. This is why it's SO important to communicate to your loved ones whether or not you do want to be an organ donor. If they know your wishes, hopefully they'd follow them. I also donate blood. Having that little bit of blood taken every few months won't hurt me, but it sure helps a heck of a lot of other people! Some people don't feel the same way as I do about donating, and that's fine. Everyone has their own opinions and beliefs about things!

| I am an organ donor as well. I can't take them with me, and that would make my life complete to help someone else.

| wow I'm impressed there are alot of donors on here, I certainly will be giving this alot of serious thought. I also was one of the ones that automaticlly said no when asked. I'm still not sure how I would feel if it was one of my kids, that's a hard one. |

| Yes, I am an organ, tissue and bone donor and so are both of my children. My hubby, however is against this and is not one. We have agreed to disagree and he also agreed not to challenge this should the deicision ever be ours to make regarding our adult children. My stepfather was an organ donor and when he passed away, because of health reasons, the only thing they could use was his corneas, but they both went to people who now see because of them. 6 years ago, my daughter's then dance instructor's daughter was hit by a car. She was brain dead upon arrival at the hospital and they elected to donate her organs. Everything was used and they have met several of the recipients and became very involved in fundraising and organ donation awareness. This is a topic that all families should openly discuss. If one family member expresses negativity, organs WILL NOT be harvested regardless of the wishes of the person from whom they would be coming. It is important to know and honor what your loved ones would want - not what your own thoughts/needs are. I personally feel this is the most generous gift anyone could give of themselves.

| people are so selfish. they should require a mandatory video on organ donation before they can refuse. maybe they are just uneducated on the needs of organ donation. * i'm proud to say i'm an organ donor. |

| My whole family are doners. My dh was also an avid blood donor before he died. I can't donate blood because I had hepatitus when I was young. What I never understood is why can't a person who has had hepatitus receive blood from someone else who has had it. That person has already been infected so what could it hurt. It would sure make for alot more donors. I would gladly give if I could.

| I don't know what part of me would be any good to help anyone else but I have always answered that question at the license bureau with a yes. I have also informed my whole family about giving permission after I'm gone. I have often wondered why anyone would say no. I would be interested in hearing the other side.

| Wanna know something weird? I was asked in Jersey to be a donor. I said yes. Then a few weeks ago my sister said that when she got her licence they asked her and she said yes. On hers it says that she's a donor. So I looked on mine, and it didn't! I never even thought about checking b/c Jersey switched the way licences looked and didn't really think about it. I guess that means I'm not?

| When I was looking up info the other day on donations I thought I found on the site www.lifegoeson.com that on Jan.1,06 a new"doner law" was passed & 40 states have adopted this new law, if you register on there witnesses nor family member consent is not needed for your organs to be used. |
