| On the anniversary of the LA Riots.... a neighbor was attacked by thieves right outside the hallway that leads to my apt. Shoot, I didn't know this happened until diner tonight! Makes me think back to the riots 18 years ago. If you aren't familiar with this insanity, here is a quick glimpse at what was going on when I was 6. This is a whole series but part 1 really depicts the anger that started it all. The first hate attack. Just to give you and idea of how scary this was, this clip was filmed on the corner of Vermont and Leeward Ave. If you google map 1298 Leeward Ave Los Angeles, you'll see just how close my home was to this. I don't expect anyone to comment, or to really read it. I'm just putting it out there as a way of venting. It makes me mad/sad/disgusted to look back and see how my LA got its bad rep.

| I grew up outside of Detroit and I remember the riots (1967) as if they were yesterday....I also remember the LA Riots and also what you have posted. I have lived through some very ugly history in the US...but many things have changed because of these awful things...No one should ever forget...

| My first experience of unrest were the Watt's Riots back when I was a child at the tender age of eight...and to this day I remember our next door neighbor whom my father referred to as the Nazi...getting his Luger out to show us that he was ready...ugh! | I remembering driving through the Federal Guard checkpoints. I also remember when Martin Luther King was killed and I was on my way to Florida for Spring break...Atlanta was on shutdown and no cars were on the roads..very difficult times. While many of us love the music and we talk about some of those times, we cannot forget change was brought to America because of all of the unrest and the change in the young people.. It is also sad how some of the shells of the building that were burnt all still standing because this was/is such a poor area of Detroit... Detroit Riot 1967/ Mr. Jacobs - Bing Video

| I agree that the sixties brought much change...some of it violent. All of the anti-establishment movements....civil rights, women's lib, Viet Nam protests and the counter-culture movement were the backdrop to all that great music. I never saw any of that down here. The most we had was some grumbling with the end of segregation. Of course, a little further upstate was a whole different story. Down here on the Coast, all the violence kind of bypassed us.

| Kent State was so shocking to so many people...and while it looks romantic it was in a dumb sort of way...No one thought the government would kill people for protesting...at least not white college kids...Kent State changed all of that and made middle America parents even start questioning what the government was doing. At least almost every weekend in Michigan you could attend some rally or protest in Ann Arbor or Lansing...Flower Power!

| I wish people were more socially aware of what is going on in this country. People are turning a blind eye and aren't reading into the information that is being given to them. Situation like these ( Watts, LA riots, etc) people became sick of being prodded and not having a voice to say "Stop". Their anger turns into violence.

| I have to also admit I really was not aware of what was going on with the Native American movement either as Michigan was so much more caught up with the black civil rights movement. What has happened to members of AIM and the FBI is another very sad tragedy that has never been corrected...Most people have no idea what really happened..
