Default Ipod help...

My daughter has an ipod....don't ask me which one...an expensive one that will hold 30,000 songs and videos....so now I need some answers.

The computer it was sync'd to...died. Along with the itunes catalog...so now if she tries to download anything from itunes...she receives a message saying...this ipod isn't sync'd to this computer...do you wish to transfer files? She tells me...if she says yes to that...the 100 plus songs currently on her ipod would be deleted and the new library started. Is this really what would happen? Kinda hate to lose the songs she's already paid for. Any way to prevent it? Or is that the way...apple and itunes get cha?

Thanks...and please speak in plus 40 year oldese.

Oh, I wish I had an answer for you. I know any time we've gotten a new pc, the iTunes library was the biggest headache. I would go to the Apple site and poke around in FAQ's. That's where I found a few answers that I needed. Sorry and Good Luck!!

READ THIS BEFORE FOLLOWING:::

Download itunes.
Plug in your Ipod.
If it asks you anything, click no or whatever.
Go to your desktop and create a new folder.... (By right clicking on your desktop. then scroll down till you see new. Then click on folder)
Go to 'my computer' on your desktop (or you can find it when you click the windows icon at the bottom of your computer)
Look for 'device' or 'ipod' or 'storage device' or whatever she named her ipod.

click through the folders until she sees the folder with all of her songs
copy them all then paste then paste them in the folder she created earlier.

NOW she has the songs on her computer and ipod.

OR

Download itunes
Just hook up ipod and then push yes to syncing.. It may or may not erase!

Ooh, I would have never thought of that. Sounds like it would work.

Another option (I think) would be to say no to synching. Then whatever computer she's on, she could manually transfer new songs to her ipod by dragging and dropping. She could also delete, one at a time. But she'd never be able to synch again. I like love_me_cody's idea for a longterm fix.

But if she loses all her songs, don't hold me responsible.

If she purchased the songs from Itunes take a look at this (it will only transfer the songs bought from Itunes)...

Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

I've never tried it so I can't promise it works.

If that isn't what you are looking for, you can usually find the answer in the discussions forum....

Whenever I buy from Itunes, I save the song in an email. Just incase everything gets erase, I can always go online from anywhere and get the song. I would hate to just buy a song then it ends up erase and I couldn't get a refund or anything.

I have never used an ipod nor itunes....so you can purchase songs and download them directly to your computer....then transfer? Just trying to clarify...I'm old here...speak slowly.

Your disclaimer is duly noted.

Yeah, download to the itunes software on your computer, then hook up iPod to the computer and transfer. And there are two ways to transfer, synching and manually.

Now no more questions. My Internet is down and I'm going with big man fingers on a tint iMac keyboard.

The frustrating thing about iTunes is that you can only synch it to one computer. So if you have your library on one computer that's the only one you can synch it with unless you erase all the stuff you already have on there. Which is what I did b/c I wanted to synch mine to a new computer (and I was kinda tired of the stuff I had on there, plus, I can always put it on my library b/c most was cd's I already have).

I think it's a good idea if you really want to save a song, or songs, to put them into an email and save it into your saved mail or something like that so that you can get it from any computer.

I've never been able to synch to another computer with my iPod without losing everything I have on it...but my other computer didnt' die, so I've got the old stuff still on it if I want to lose all the new stuff. That's the beauty of APPLE.
