| UPDATE!! Hippo ~ My Blue Born Yorkie Hi~I just wanted to update on Hippo (my blue born puppy)!! He is not so little anymore!! He will be 2 years old in 3 months!! I'll give a little history: His mom is a reddish/tan with blue back (6 pounds) & his dad is blonde with a silver back (4 pounds). They were both really healthy dogs from reputable breeders. So when we bred them ~ we were surprised to see a silver pup in the litter. She had 3 boys. We named this blue born pup 'Hippo' because he looked like a tiny fat Hippo!! He was a whopping 6.5 oz at birth!! His mom had no complications ~ they were all born healthy & he was the 2nd one born. The first one was 6 oz & the last boy was 4 oz. So he was always the biggest & strongest!! He was also the smartest & the first one to pad train & eat solid food. I too had read horrific things to do to this precious little blue born pup ~ I obviously could not!! & gave him a chance at life!! His vet told us he is extremely healthy & he also has a blue born Doberman that is equally extremely healthy!! He definitely agreed NOT to kill these puppies!! In his expertise ~ if blue borns are deathly sick ~ they would've been anyways ~ just like you can get deathly sick 'normal' coloured dogs!! The do have very sparse hair & it feels coarser than the other yorkies ~ but we love him just the same!! Hippo has grown to a very muscular 9 pounds!!! The vet said he has never seen such large, muscular hind quarters on a yorkie before!! He is very healthy!! He runs & runs & runs on our 2 acre property ~ never seeming to hardly tire!! He also thinks he is a heard dog & heards our 2 milk goats when they are in the pasture!! He is still a smarty & does tricks too!! His favourite is to jump up & twirl for treats!! We definitely are enjoying our blue born yorkie!! |

| Here are a couple more pictures of Hippo: In the first picture: Hippo is far right ~ sorry it's a 'bum shot' ~ but I thought it was a good one to show the colouring!! In the second picture: This is Hippo needing a grooming!! I thought it was a good shot to show how his hair is whispy ~ so I usually keep his body buzzed right down & then have his head & legs scissored. He has no hair to trim on his ears, face, or bum. (which makes him an easy one to cut!!) We think he is just beautiful ~ but maybe we're just a little bit biased!! |

| He looks very healthy. I've seen a few members on this forum that have kept a blue born. I'm glad your keeping us updated on yours. It's interesting to read about them. I had no idea what they were till I joined this site. I'm learning something new everyday!

| He is a handsome young man....he has been neutered, correct? You do NOT want to breed him. He is a "first generation" blue born....the son of two carriers. If he were to be bred to a first generation blue born female, THAT litter is where you start finding severe health issues, because you are doubling up that genetic fault....and God forbid, any of THOSE babies that are blue borns, are sold as "rare" prized Yorkies, and then THAT blue born is bred to another first generation or later blue lorn, THOSE are the pups that would be a true genetic disaster, personified by health issues to internal organs, as well as physical evidence that something has gone terribly wrong.....THESE babies are the ones that, thankfully, usually die, as Mother Nature tries desperately to correct this assault on her. I am NOT saying this is sales you would be making....I am using this as an example of how the genes start doubling up, then tripling up, and you have a ticking time bomb. | Hippo Hippo looks very much like his Mother in coloring. I guess I dont pick up the blue coloring on a lot of these dogs. I have been breeding for 20+ years and have never seen one I would call a blue born in my litters although some are lighter in color. Yorkies have traditionally been registered with the blue option on the reg papers. I think it means that the black coloring is shimmering with a blue tone. I wonder if a lot of dogs are just being labeled with the blue born tag.
