| I need your opinion... our 4.5 lb 7 month old baby girl is getting spayed next Fri. Will it be too much for her to get the following: 1. spayed 2. two front dewclaws removed 3. several baby teeth removed all in the same procedure? Secondly, she hates the buster collar and gets very depressed when it's put on her. Can we simply put on her diaper to prevent pulling of stitches? Lastly, we have a great vet, trust him very much but he does not do blood works prior to surgery. Should I be concerned? We talked to him about this and he says it's not necessary. She just finished her last dose of antibiotics for a bacerial infection yesterday that he says might have been caused by something she ate and her stool is nice and solid and she seems to be back to normal. I'm so anxious about all these procedures! Please advice. What should I expect after the surgery? Jennie

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | you can get a baby onesie to put on her to help her from getting the stitches. as far as having all that done, I have no idea, but when my Kloey had her herina removed she also had baby teeth removed. chk with your vet and even call for a 2nd opinion. |

| Ive always heard you are supposed to get teeth pulled at the same time as gettign spayed because it best to do it all at once while they are under. Im surprised her dew claws were not removed when she was a puppy so I have no idea about that one.

Our vet told us that b/c her teeth were not pulled while she was younger (as he typically does with his other patients) she's developed a slight underbite since it had no room to grow.

| I posted a thread similar to this regarding the lack of blood work prior to surgery. My vet doesn't seem to think it is necessary prior to me having Nikko neutered. Many on here have said I should go elsewhere as blood work is important because it can detect underlying conditions that could cause complications during the surgery. I would (and am) get a second opinion. As for the dewclaws, my boy has them in the front also. I just get them clipped.

| Lucy got her baby teeth pulled while she was getting spayed, she was also microchipped and got her nails trimmed. It's best to do it at the same time, so she only has to be put under once. I don't know about the dewclaws though, she had those removed when she was a baby. Lucy got all the blood work done beforehand, which I think is very important, IMHO, and she also had painkillers to take for a day or two. The first night she was very groggy and I didn't get much sleep because I watched over her the whole night, but she was great the next day. And Lucy also was not interested in pottying outside that evening so she did wet the bed. Just beware of that and good luck!

| You have to decide what you want to do, however, I don't think I would have them removed now. I was curious about this and looked this up and I think it will help you. Should You Or Should You Not Remove Dew Claws? http://thebestdogstuff.com/healthy-l..._dew_claws.php

| thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. It was very helpful. I think I was already leaning on keeping her dewclaws but just needed a push. I think I will keep them since she hasn't had any problems as of yet. THANKS ALL!

| Having dew claws removed at 7 months is considered an amputation. I would not put one through that pain unless there is a health issue with them. My Chizzie has dewclaws -- I just watch them carefully and make sure that the toenails are clipped regularly and she does fine. I would definately have bloodwork done. Anestethetics can be fatal to dogs with undetected liver issues. All it takes is a simple inexpensive blood panel to rule out this danger. |
