| German Shephard & Toy Yorkie Hey Everyone! I'm new here and i just wanted to get some advice about a little issue i'm having. I have a 5 pound Yorkie named Harry. He is the most friendlist dog you will find. He gets along great with other animals. My fiancee and I were discussing about getting another dog. I of course wanted another Yorkie or a Pug but he wants a German Shephard. He told me that since I'm home alone at night (he works at night) he wants to have a "real" dog to protect me. I agreed because its true. I dont think Harry will protect little ol' me if someone were to break in the house. He'll probably wag his tail and demand a belly rub from the intruder. Anywho...we're planning on getting the German Shephard as a puppy so we can train her and have Harry get use to her. Do you think getting a GS will be safe for Harry?? I was told that since Harry is a male that i should get a female so that there wont be any territorial issues. Also i was told that since i have a small male dog that the GS will most likely adopt Harry as her own since she is the bigger one in the house. What do you guys think????? I dont want to come home and find Harry in her mouth when she gets bigger. Please ADVICE! HELP ME CALM DOWN ABOUT THIS! THANKS! |

| You have the right idea, train the GS from a baby and they will be awesome together. But as with any larger breed and a small breed never leave them alone unattended. Just because of sheer size they could be playing and the Yorkie be injured. Welcome to YT!!

| We have a Shepherd and a Yorkie. Both are males and the shepherd is fixed but the yorkie isn't. Our shepherd was about a year old when we brought Diesel home. I was also told to get a girl so that things would go smoothly. All of the girls were taken (thank goodness lol ) so we brought home a mall yorkie instead. Shep snapped at him a few times and sniffed at him and followed him all over the house. It was a rough few weeks but things calmed down and now they get along fine. They are actually best buds.We still have to watch them very closely. Diesel is soo little that he can get stepped on or sat on by shep. That is to be expected when it comes to big and little dogs. Good luck Michelle |

| I doubt that your second dog being a male or female will make much difference. I have always had a mixture of both - and their individual personalities have always been more important than their gender. Either or both can get along very well. You may be surprised to find your little Yorkie ending up ruling the roost rather than the bigger dog. My little Yorkie is totally in charge of my 24-pound Bichon.. However, neither of mine have a dominant nature. They are both somewhat shy, laid back, and gentle. If you do get a GS pup - the only thing I would be concerned about is the puppy energy and behavior that the GS will have for a while. His playful puppy behavior and his "teething stage" will be a little awsome for another dog that is so much smaller. (These little GS guys can be a handful for even us adult people at times.) Be sure and protect your little guy during these first stages, and I'm sure they can grow to become fast friends. Good luck! Carol Jean |
