| Advice on medication Trazadone I, personally, and my son, have had less than stellar reactions on this med. Any way, we are flying 9 hours in a few days. We are down to the wire, and Chews is to take 1/4 and up to 1/2 depending. As high strung as she is, vet strongly disagrees with sedating her, as it would potentially make it worse for her. I need to do a trial run before monday in case she needs Xanax. Do I do it tonight? Right now? Midnight ? any ideas? Tomorrow is her favorite playdate, and she looks forward to this every week. Besides that, her trainer is coming over with essential oils to help her freak outs about the boxer arsehole. any way, any advice needed, it's urgent. Since this isn't a medical issue, I posted it here. |

| Heavy :( WoW, trazadone is a pretty heavy anti-physc med. I've had it and also had a bad reaction while using. Please be very careful with this med on your tiny baby. I'm fearful for you. I would think that xanax would be a better med for your pup. I take xanax the night before if I know that I'm going to have a stressful day and I wake up calmer and stay that way into the late afternoon when it starts to wear off. I only use .25mg. and I'm a 130 lb woman. Have you tried trazadone before on you pup? This is scary. I'm sorry if I'm projecting my own anxiety on this situation so please forgive me. Good luck with the dose. |

| she was given 12.5 mg. she's now 6 pounds. She's too high strung, and while Promethazine is an option for a lot of dogs, the doc given her history (drooling, GI upsets, screaming, keening) from stress, we felt it prudent to NOT give her a drug that would keep her high strung but sedated. Besides, I don't consider trazadone a heavy psych med, but, you're speaking to a person who has a son that is severely what his dx is, that he took thorazine and it was hundreds of mg when he was only 6, so, perhaps my thinking is skewed. |

| I love Trazodone for Jackson. I only give it when he REALLY needs it. Xanax did *nothing* for him. Jackson gets really bad anxiety during long travel, thunder, fireworks, etc. He can send himself into a total panic - pacing, panting, shaking. He also does not like vets or groomers. He shakes so bad. It's funny because in 90% of his life, he's a wonderful "bombproof" dog -- he's good on family vacations, he loves exploring new places/towns/etc, meeting new dogs and people, etc etc. Anyway he is 18lbs and I have found 1/2 of a pill relaxes him for about 4 hours. I have to time it right. If I give it too close to the stressful event, it doesn't help much. I have to give it about 1 hour prior. What I like about it is that it doesn't just sedate him. It actually takes his anxiety away where he's able to go lay down and relax. I can almost see the weight come off his shoulders. There is nothing wrong with helping your dog through their anxiety with medication. I'd rather have him on pills a few times a month than watch him being THAT stressed. Prior we tried Rescue Remedy, calming chews, sprays, Thundershirt, etc, to no avail.

| I was reading about it in dogs and it says there where no observable side effects in dogs. Keep in mind medicines work different in dogs then they do in humans.

| Meds Oops! I was mistaken. I was thinking Tramadol not Trazadone. Yes, my vet did put my chihuahua on Trazadone once and she did okay on it. The Tramadol is the human equivalent of Trazadone. Sorry for the mix-up. |

Trazodone is an antidepressant that is used in lower doses as a sleep aid. It is not a narcotic and is not addictive. It is also used as an anti-anxiety medication in dogs, and has no major side effects. Our Bella took tramadol briefly following her luxating patella surgery and she did well. We took her off it as soon as her surgical pain subsided. Bella has never had trazodone, but I would consider asking the vet about it if she ever develops anxiety or has to go on a long trip. I've taken trazodone for sleep. I've never taken tramadol. I would have to have very severe pain before I would ever consider it, and then I would take as little as possible. | |

| No Tramadol is tramadol in the human world and it is a pain medication for both humans and dogs. Traazadone is used as a psychiatric drug for humans and used for anxiety in dogs.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Did you try the Traz yet, and how did it go...? I hope well ! Personally, I too wouldn't hesitate to use trazadone, valium, or acepromazine in my kiddo if it helped them get thru a highly stressful event for them. I'd try it beforehand like you're doing and find out which one worked best. Medications like this can be game changers - so yup, wouldn't hesitate to try!
