| New Yorkie owner looking for advice! Hi all! I just got my parents a yorkie for Christmas. Their kids are grown and gone, and they could really use a companion. The yorkie (called Kismet unless they decide to rename her) has been living with me in secret for a few days and will be given to them tomorrow. She is not quite a baby (she's 9 months) and already house and crate trained by the time she came to me. In the last few days I have been reading up on Yorkies a TON (which I also did before buying her). I've already read the puppy guide on this website as well as many others, but I'll admit I'm a little overwhelmed by all the info out there! So as I continue to research, I just wanted to ask you lovely yorkie people: what advice do you think is crucial to a new yorkie owner? Last edited by RennaMira; 12-24-2016 at 09:01 PM. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Congrats to your parents, and to you too ! Crucial advice: give her time she will need to adjust to everything, make her feel safe and secure, and give lots of TLC. And never, ever, EVER allow her off leash outside of the yard. Even if she does fine off leash, you cannot ever predict other loose dogs' behaviors...so just don't ever risk doing it. Get her microchipped asap. For supplies, you probably are already set, yes....?

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping people would share. Let's see, supplies I have a bed, crate, puppy pads, food (Hills science diet), bowls, collar, harness, leash, and... I think that's it. She has one chew toy that she came with, haven't had a chance to go toy shopping with her yet. | |

To add to this, LOTs of patience while this baby adjusts to new life with new momma. Remember, your moms home will be this baby's THIRD home, even tho she was with you just a few days she was learning to accept you, bond with you, adjusting to her new surrounding, new smells, new schedule, now she will go to your moms, AGAIN, adjusting to new momma, surroundings etc. She "may" have accidents in the house while again making these new adjustments, never scold or raise your voice if potty accidents happen, just show her where she is to potty. Repeat:::: LOTS of PATIENCE. What a wonderful Christmas present.

| Lots of patience and give lots of love. Never raise your voice and always reward her when she is good. Feed her a good diet and no people food. Enjoy! Susan |

| Be sure to keep something like nutrical on hand, yorkie puppies can get hypoglycemic (will start to get the shakes) especially after lots of play, but if you free feed it's usually not so bad. Not all puppies have as bad of an issue about it, but it's good to have for other various reasons, like stimulating appetite or to give her something for times when she needs to not eat anything (like the night before surgery or post surgery and they are shaky). But treat it like candy and only give like a pea size, as it's a quick boost for energy.
