Hyper Boy... Hurt himself??? Was wanting to know if anyone has ever dealt with a hyper yorkie. My boy, Wyski, is 5 ½ months old and is very playful and hyper... well, he continuously hits his head jumping all over my other dog, my female maltipoo, Snoflake. They play often but Wyski jumps so widely that he tumbles off of her our runs into walls... especially when he has his leash on and it stops him in the middle of running @full speed. He is tough but can he hurt himslf badly if he continues running crazy? He hit his head hard today and seems Ill. He is warm and his nose isn't really wet. I can take his tempature but I dnt wanna put him thru that if he isn't feeling well. He isn't burning fells low grade... but could this B from him hitting his head or Mayb eating something in the house. He is teething so he bites my wood off the door corners, chews my plastic sandals... I mean he eats and chews it all... any help guys?

Yes, any one who has ever had a yorkie puppy has had a hyper puppy, that's a normal healthy yorkie puppy. As for hitting his head, he NEEDS to see a vet ASAP. Any time a dog or any other living thing hits their head it is considered an Emergency & you should NEVER wait & see if they will be ok. A hit on the head can & often does cause a concussion & they can lead to life long seizures from scarring on the brain from the brain bleeding , AND a concussion can cause death. This is nothing to mess around with ever. As far as his chewing, he is a baby & he is teething & will be for quite awhile longer, you need to correct him when he's chewing on things he shouldn't be chewing on & if you can't keep a constant eye on him then those times he needs to be in a pen or a crate. Puppies are just like toddlers & they should not ever be left unattended in an area that's not 100% safe for them to be alone in, just like a human baby/toddler as he's too young to know rite from wrong. IF he's chewed pieces on those shoes or any other object & there is ANY possibility that he's swallowed it then he needs to see the vet to confirm there is no intestinal blockage. It is not uncommon for yorkie puppies or ALL puppies for that matter to become blocked from something they ate that they should not have eaten and require surgery to remove it or they will die. I hope this information helps & congratulations on your new family member & WELCOME to YT ! We look forward to hearing about your your new babies antics.

He needs to definitely be seen if he hit his head and seems off. A very simple solution for him chewing on anything inappropriate, tell him no and spray it with bitter apple. They usually HATE the taste of the bitter apple spray (made for this purpose) and stop immediately.

| Yes hyper puppy is normal. But as puppy momma, you need to ensure his safety. Playing is okay. Hitting head is no good If you ever find him playing too hard, I'd say it's time to give them a break. My dogs play hard too. When I got my second, she was super hyper, but she wouldn't ever hit her head. Only time she ever did was when she ran past me and smashed her face into the glass door before I could open it. Guess she didn't see the door. I've admittedly done that before too. She's since learned about glass doors. But please, if you can prevent it, don't ever let him hit his head (or let him hurt himself in any way or form). And yes, definitely have the vet check him out for concussion.

Hard hit on the head requires a vet visit....may be nothing, but could be a slow leak in a ruptured blood vessel, which causes a build up of intracranial pressure on the brain.....not normal for pup to continually sustain blows to his head, then running into walls.....

Sometimes you have to protect these babies from themselves especially when they are young. I had to move furniture and keep a very close eye on Gracie when she was a puppy. When they are playing they don't always think about the results of their activities. I would get him to the vet if he is acting abnormally. Taking him for walks (or runs) will help him to run off some of that excess energy so he will be calmer in the house. A tired puppy does not get into trouble (quite so much).

Dear ATXQueenB...first off, how is Wyski today? Hard for you to know exactly unless, you take him to a good vet so, please do that for him ASAP banging his head constantly and recently you said quite hard, could have implications on him that as a Mom you should want to prevent. If Wyski is running into walls with a leash on first, take him and your other dog outside to rumble and play off leash, like the wild dogs they truly are and deserve to be... Lastly, listen to your Motherly instinct: take his temperature if your inner instinct is leading you to, even if you say Wyski wasn't feeling well and you didn't want to bother him, LISTEN TO YOUR GOD GIVEN MOTHERLY INSTINCT you were given that for situations like the one your in so, honour it and take proactive measures today with Wyski. Lastly, you need to replace what Wyski is chewing on, you mention your wood doors, with better alternatives for example, chew sticks and other toys. Next tine he starts chewing on a door pick him up and go into another area and give him a chew stick and engage with him ie. hold the chew stick at one end and let him chew the other end and as he's doing that slowly let go and allow him to master chewing on it by himself. Remember it's your responsibility to correct poor behavior and to provide healthy alternatives and never wait to see how your dog is when they hit there head hard he could have a concussion. Make sure your vet provides you with solutions that are proactive if not, get a new vet. But always trust your Motherly instincts and follow them. We would all love to hear a follow-up from you as to what you have done for Wyski and how he is. Provide Wyski with alternatives as I've mentioned as well as the other YTer's Moms we all wish Wyski more fun without head hitting andyou can correct this but time is of the essence before beforesomething serious happens to him. Good luck!
