| Tick head not removed I am more than positive I did not get the ticks head out when I removed it. The tick was close to the armpit of his front leg, there was / is a round red mark almost the size of a dime where the tick was, I am thinking it is red because their skin is sensitive in that area. 35+ years of removing ticks from dogs, this is a first for me. The tick was small, I am sure it was not a deer tick as I have checked on line for pictures. I think it was a young tick as the body wasn't hard like some ticks I have removed in the past, reason why I didn’t want to apply a lot of pressure to pull it out, didn’t want to squash it, it was latched tightly on, reason why I am positive I didn’t get the head out. What are the signs of infection at the bite site and will he show any signs, like not eating or drinking water. All I can see besides this redness is a black dot, the size of a pin head. He got this tick late this afternoon as I check his body every time he comes in after being in the yard.

| Same thing happened to me... It will be red for a few days and then scab a little and fall out on its own. |

| I don't know if this method would work but I saw on youtube how someone applied the tick repellent (like advantix) right on the spot and the tick just fell out on its own. I did do a search and this is what I found that looked important if you didn't do it already: The Epsom salt soak involves preparing a solution of warm water and Epsom salt, dipping a washcloth in the solution and applying it to the inflamed area for five minutes. Not only does this draw out the infection, it loosens the tick parts remaining in the skin and brings them to the skin's surface. If a tick head remains untreated in a dog, granulation tissue forms around the tick head, preventing infection from spreading to other parts of the dog's body. If the tick head remains embedded and the site remains inflamed, a vet may need to remove the tick head. |

| I just checked the bite site, the redness did get lighter, but I am positive I didn't get the head out. I didn't know about the Epsom salt, I'll have to buy some tomorrow, do you think waiting until tomorrow this method would still work.

| I don't know about that, all I see is a black dot below the skin surface, this tick on your pup, was it a big tick or small one.

| I think someone else used peroxide to clean the area... Three-percent hydrogen peroxide, the common disinfectant, is recommended for tick bites because the oxygen it contains destroys the Lyme disease bacteria. Hydrogen peroxide can be liberally poured over bites on light-haired dogs (keep away from eyes and apply directly to the skin) but because it’s a bleach, this method is not recommended for black or dark-haired dogs. Using an eyedropper to apply hydrogen peroxide directly to the bite helps prevent unwanted bleaching. |

| Very small tick...I thought I had a good grip close to the head but I also wasn't positive I got the head... I also saw the small black dot and then the inflamed skin. I cleaned it well with an alcohol swab and it dried out in a couple days. |

| Thanks, I'm such a worry wart and this is the first time I never got the entire tick out. Thank you. BTW, I have family up your way, Peekskill.

YT 1000 Club Member | I have been told in the past that it will work it's way out. When I have a tick I spray it with tick repellent and it usually will be so upset it will wiggle it's way out because it is mad. I use Avon Bug Guard and have used it on limited areas of my dog just for tick removal, although I only use Avon Skin So Soft on them as needed. Luckily I don't have ticks in our yard (never seen one in 12 years here) so around the house I don't have to worry about them. If we take them to the walking trail though I have to check for ticks when we get home. I hope someone has a better answer for you. I would definitely keep an eye on it though.

I was very worried at the time also! It's so uneasy knowing that part of that awful parasite is still inside! They say the tick needs to feed for 48 hrs in order to transmit anything so since the one you found wasn't yet engorged I would say the chances of contracting a tick related illness is very small. Yes, Peekskill is very close to me! | |
