Default Tick head not removed

I am more than positive I did not get the ticks head out when I removed it. The tick was close to the armpit of his front leg, there was / is a round red mark almost the size of a dime where the tick was, I am thinking it is red because their skin is sensitive in that area. 35+ years of removing ticks from dogs, this is a first for me. The tick was small, I am sure it was not a deer tick as I have checked on line for pictures. I think it was a young tick as the body wasn't hard like some ticks I have removed in the past, reason why I didn’t want to apply a lot of pressure to pull it out, didn’t want to squash it, it was latched tightly on, reason why I am positive I didn’t get the head out. What are the signs of infection at the bite site and will he show any signs, like not eating or drinking water. All I can see besides this redness is a black dot, the size of a pin head. He got this tick late this afternoon as I check his body every time he comes in after being in the yard.
