YT 1000 Club Member | 2 puppies at once Just looking for advice. When we bring home the 2 puppies (brother and sister) we will have an area set up for them in our hallway. I have 2 crates so they will each have their own. If they share a crate can I remove one and then just use them for when I take them places separately? Should I separate them regularly? I know my daughter will take hers down to her room quite a bit and so she could have one of the crates in there for her. That will give me alone time with my puppy as well. The 2 crates will take up a bit of the space they have so one crate would be better. Since they will confined by the exercise pen I am hoping they will have free run of that area and then will only be crated when I am training them to be in their crates and when we go places. I want them to be able to sleep in there and use the bathroom (pee pads) at night so I don't plan to lock them in crates at night. They will be in this area at night and when I can not be watching them closely during the day so it won't be all the time. I just want them to have room to play too. It is a 5 foot by almost 5 foot area they will have, but if that is too much at first I can make it smaller and then give them more room of it if they are just peeing and pooping all over instead of using pee pads. I have never had 2 puppies at the same time before. This will be a new and hopefully fun experience! I am planning to get the male puppy fixed right at 6 months or when the vet says I can. I want to get the female fixed closer to her first birthday. I do not want any unplanned sibling pregnancies with them. I do feel that letting the girl mature just a little more is a good thing though. I don't think the surgery is as hard on the male as it is on her and if she is a little bit older I think it would be better for her.

| I am enjoying my experience with having two puppies at once, even though one is two months older than the other. They play with each other and where one is, so is the other one. I am housebreaking both of them at the same time, if one goes out, they both go out. I take both of them to the vets together, to puppy classes together and am training both of them together. My puppies are in different crates but that is because we had Duncan for 2 months before we got Elliot so he was a bit more housebroken than Elliot was and we didn't want Elliot having accidents in Duncan's crate. But I put them both together in the pen and they take naps together and play together. Of course, having two of them together, I don't get a lot done since they follow me all over and they always want to sit on my lap together. I have had more happiness, love, laughter and fun with the two of them than I have had in a long time since they came into my life. I am looking forward to enjoying them for many more years to come. I think you are going to have so much fun with the two puppies. I had Duncan for two months before Elliot but I think it has been much easier since we got Elliot and have the two of them together.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Congrats on your almost new babies ! How exciting. I wouldn't be surprised if they only used one crate together, at first. Nothing wrong w/ that. It sounds like you have a nice size area for them to have as their own, and I'm glad you won't be locking them in their crates. Be very careful on the spay thing...you should be okay as long as the male gets neutered before the female goes into heat. Btw, you usually want to spay the female before her 1st heat...so waiting til she is 1 may not be feasible...just fyi.

YT 1000 Club Member | I am hoping she doesn't go into heat prior to that. Her mama did not go into heat until she was almost 2 years old. What is the "normal" age for this. I know with bigger dogs they can go into heat around 6 months, but I guess I was thinking the smaller dogs tended to be later. I am thinking about 8-10 months on her. I do plan to get him fixed as soon as the vet gives the okay. I am hoping about 5 1/2-6 months for him. I absolutely do not want puppies at all and definitely not between the two of them. I would feel so bad if they had puppies since they are siblings. I plan to do everything I can to avoid that and if I thought she might be in heat I would separate them immediately if he was not fixed yet. I will not be lazy about getting him fixed that is for sure. I only want her to have just a little more time to mature before getting spayed. I had a couple dogs fixed at 6 months and wished I had waited even another couple months.
