YT 1000 Club Member | Possible Heart Murmur Hi y'all! I'm new to the forum but I have a serious dilemma. I've always wanted a yorkie since I was a teenager. My husband is in the military and we recently PCS'd and after finishing nursing school, and setting up our new home my husband and I came to the decision that we can add another dog to the family(we have a 14 month old english bulldog). Since I will be a stay at home mom to our 5 year old son. I found an excellent breeder through my neighbor who had a litter born in May. I was able to pick the puppy I wanted(a female) and put my deposit down for the pup. The breeder gave me a call today and informed me she took the pups for a check up a few weeks ago and was informed by the vet that she heard a slight murmur coming from my future puppy. The breeder took the pups for their 8 week check up and vaccinations yesterday and was told by the vet that she did not hear the murmur anymore. I have already fallen in love with this little girl! The breeder advised she has a check up on the 29th of this month to verify whether or not the murmur Is there. The breeder has offered to refund the deposit or give me pick of a little boy pup I also had my eye on if there is something wrong with the female. If there is nothing wrong with the female I would love to have her and of course I will take her to our on post vet to verify her health within 48 hours of picking her up. My question(s) is/are: 1. Should I pass on this puppy and the male since she seems to already be experiencing issues and get my deposit back? 2. Should I get the male pup who is completely healthy and was my second choice ? 3. Should I just wait til the check up on the 29th and go from there? *I have called the breeders vet and she verified everything that the breeder told me regarding the female puppy* |

| Sounds like you have actually managed to stumble on a great breeder! Honesty and integrity go a very long way when you are dealing with a breeder and the future of that baby. Heart murmurs are common in small breed puppies, and regularly resolve themselves as the baby ages. I had a buyer that bought a baby with a "slight heart murmur" and she was so distraught about it...but, bless her heart, she trusted me completely, and she believed me about the murmur resolving, and it did and she was ecstatic, because she too, had fallen in love with the little girl! I think you should keep the little girl, see what the check up on the 29th shows, chances are excellent it has closed because they did not hear it at 8 weeks yesterday, and go from there. It does not go away then come back and then go away again....once you no longer hear it, it has resolved....like I said, it is very common for toy breed puppies to have slight murmurs..... |

YT 2000 Club Member | I agree, too. My first yorkie had a mild heart murmur when I brought her home. It resolved itself and she had no problems with it.

| It is possible she had a heart murmur but grew out of it. I had a heart murmur when I was a born until around 5 when I grew out of it and I have had no other heart problems so I would think it would be/could be the same for a pup.

I do concur with this breeder does seem very honest and wanting to do the best action for her puppy and future potential owner. Not many do this. Heart murmurs can be a bit iffy in young pups. Especially at Grade1 or so. That means they can clear up as they age; but sometimes maybe not. I urge you to wait to make a final commitment until after the end of the month appointment with the breeders vet.

YT 1000 Club Member | thank you! Thank y'all for lending your ear and giving me the advice! My breeder is definitely a wonderful lady when it comes to her furry family members as with everything else from what I've seen. She actually asked me more questions about my home/daily routine than I did about her dogs and how she raises them. Which I thought was impossible since I had what seems like a grocery list of questions. She offered to let me tagalong with her for the vet visit, but we'll be out of town visiting my in laws or as my son calls them "Memaw" and "Papaw". Since I can't go, she'll have the vet print out paperwork with the diagnosis and recommendation with whether or not to sell the puppy and we'll go from there. My contract will cover any genetic defects (in this case the heart murmur) that the female puppy will have and since the breeder already knows of this she will pay for any meds/vet visits my baby will have and already have on hand the meds her vet prescribes if any(crossing my fingers she doesn't need any) when/if we are able to take her home in August. If y'all don't mind can you please send up a quick prayer that everything will turn out right with my little girl on the 29th? I appreciate it! |

| You hold onto that breeder!!! You have found someone that cares more about her babies and her new owners, than she does the $$$$$$!!! God Bless her! Hopefully she is not going to get out of breeding anytime soon!!!! |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | That sounds wonderfull, and so refreshing to hear here, as we often times hear of much less than the best breeder and the owners anguish.
