| New dog owner in Australia (introduction) Hello everyone! I didn't see any rules against intro threads, so here I am. This is my first post but I've been reading the topics for about a month. These forums are a lifesaver! My little boy will arrive in May when he's 8-9 weeks old. I am very excited as I've never had a dog before (only cats). I chose a Yorkie because my research told me they're great companion dogs. I'm often house- or even bed-bound for health reasons and a dog would ease the loneliness, especially since I just moved to Australia a few weeks ago (I'm a bit of a globe-trotter!) My only concern is that I don't know anyone locally who has dogs, and I know it's really important for socialisation to start early. The local dog parks seem quite dangerous (aggressive dogs unleashed), and the puppy play groups are expensive. I can take him but probably not too often. How often should my puppy meet other dogs for socialisation? |

| Congrats on your new furbaby and welcome to YT. As for socialization, I don't have an answer for you. My little one (silky/yorkie mix) met quite a few dogs of all sizes when he was a puppy and we had a boat. He doesn't get out much anymore (he is 4yo) but when he does, he is always happy to meet other dogs and has never freaked out. He has to always remain on leash when out of the house, though, because he is a brat and runs away from us to go exploring. Look forward to pics of your new baby.

| Hi and welcome to YT!! Congrats on your upcoming addition. A Yorkie love will definitely ease your lonliness. They are a bit active, though, so be ready for that ok? They aren't your typical "lap dog" and if they hear you call them that, they will curse at you hehe As for meeting up with others in your area that have small dogs, perhaps ask your vet if he/she could recommend a playdate or introduce you to fellow Yorkie and small dog owners that use the same vet.

| Thank you both for the warm welcome! MandiesMom, thank you also for the advice. My partner is very active and a great support, he's happy to take over on days when I can't walk our baby or play with him. I love what you say about not calling them "lap dogs" - One of the things I love about Yorkies is that they have such a personality! Thanks again! |

| Welcome to Yorkie talk..I can't help you with your question, due to I have three Yorkies. But they are usually friendly with everyone, people, cats, dogs. Every time I have gotten a new baby, the others have openly accepted the newbie.. I just love all of mine, they always want to be with me and Mine are def. LAPDOGS... As a matter of fact two are on my lap right now. So happy you decided on a Yorkie for your stay at home buddy. You will wonder why you never had one before now... |

| Welcome and congratulations on your soon to be fur son. Maybe you could start a play date at your house. Invite those with tiny dogs only though. Why do they charge for play dates there? Here in the states I've never heard of such a thing. Also maybe you should wait till that little one is 12 weeks old. They need to learn a lot from their moms in order to make them a well rounded pet.

| Sherregowen - I am already wondering that! Just yesterday I told my partner "I miss him and I don't even have him yet!" Yorkiedaze - Thanks for the advice. Puppy play groups charge, I assume because they have to pay for the space, as well as someone to supervise. They are privately run. Also, possibly because it seems everything here is expensive! I can't really start a group precisely because I'm new in the country and don't know anyone, but that is a great idea in the future, since I have a good-sized yard! I'm hoping to meet some friendly people at the paid groups (puppy play school, obedience training, etc) who will want to do separate play dates. The local dog parks have a bad reputation, and I've JUST found out that I can't take my puppy on the bus with me! This is a first for me as the other countries I've lived in all allowed well-behaved pets on board, as long as they're on a leash. I can't drive, and the only dog parks are several suburbs away, so I'm starting to run out of options! Fingers crossed I'll just meet people along the way interested in play dates. So far this has been a very isolating city, so I'm becoming more and more creative, in many ways, not just dog-related! |
